SENANG DIRI 稍息 reimagines a former military barrack as a co-living environment supporting young adults with unresolved childhood trauma. Experiences shaped by unhealthy family environments often persist as internal struggles into adulthood. The existing structure embodies a rigid, ordered, and disciplined architecture of control, reflecting emotional restraint.
Within this controlled shell, the design introduces a fragmented interior as a contrasting spatial language. Spaces are organised as a gradual sequence, from intimate environments for personal reflection to open communal settings that support collective engagement.
Through this progression of thresholds, architecture mediates between containment and release, transforming isolation into connection and supporting emotional recovery.

Coming from a small town in Malaysia, I developed an early awareness of space as a carrier of memory, imagination, and lived experience. This sensitivity sparked my passion for design and led me to pursue my studies in Singapore, where I broadened my perspective and deepened my understanding of how environments shape human behaviour and perception.
I see design as a process of shaping relationships between people and their surroundings, beyond mere form-making. Through thoughtful and context-sensitive approaches, I strive to create spaces that are grounded, intentional, and emotionally resonant, enriching everyday life and fostering deeper connections between people and place.
