Course Overview

This module introduces the learners to Design Thinking, a user-centric mindset to look at problems and situations. To solve problems, the learners have to search for novel alternatives beyond existing solutions. They will embrace an experimental attitude to systematically and iteratively discover solutions that are not only useful but are feasible and viable, e.g., to be cost-effective, to be elder-friendly or to be of specific sizes.


These skills are the core of optimal solutions to problems we face in our daily lives, be it at home or in the school environment. Students will learn many examples of creative design thinking solutions in our daily lives, and how they can use the 5-steps design thinking philosophy in a hands-on project. They will be exposed to prototyping tools such as 3D-printing machines and other equipment in our cutting-edge MakerSpace+ studio. They will learn basic empathy and customer interview skills to test their prototypes.


It will be conducted within a duration of 30 hours with a class size of 20.




This module aims to:


  1. Introduce students to Design Thinking
  2. Encourage students to embrace an experimental attitude to discover solutions
  3. Provide opportunities for students to apply the 5-step design thinking philosophy

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:


a. Develop a creative, out-of-the-box mindset in exploring opportunities and solving real-life challenges with Design Thinking, a human-centric innovation approach. They will learn mental tools to be more creative towards solving problems.

b. Sharpen their skills in building simple prototypes to test and validate their ideas.

c. Work in teams to plan their projects, do customer interviews and research, and present as a team on their results.


Students will be assessed against the following criteria:



  • Class participation - 10%
  • Assignments - 40%
  • Pitching presentation - 20%



  • Presentation content and prototype - 30%


Completion criteria:


Students are required to:


  • Fulfill 75% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
