Course Overview

You have seen and heard of 3D printing but have you ever wondered how 3D printers work or how you can print something physical? Join this AEM course and you will be taught the fundamentals of 3D printing as well as learn basic modeling using computer software while having fun. You will learn skills to making solid models and in the process learn about mechatronics. You will also get to bring home something that you print. 

 

It will be conducted within a duration of 30 hours with a class size of 20.

 

 

OBJECTIVES OF THIS MODULE

 

  • Provide students with an appreciation of three-dimensional (3D) Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Equip students with the knowledge of  mechatronics behind 3D printers 
  • Explore various fabrication possibilities with 3D printing technology
  • Apply visualising, modelling and prototyping by using CAD and 3D printing

 

This module is taught Intensively over a 1-week or 4 day session during the Secondary Schools’ Post-exam period or school vacation.

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

 

  1. appreciate the concepts of 3D CAD and prototyping
  2. understand the mechatronics behind 3D printers
  3. develop skills for visualisation and product design
  4. produce solid models with CAD tools
  5. fabricate part models using 3D printing

 

Students will be assessed on the following criteria:

 

Individual

  • Class participation 10%
  • Quiz 20%
  • Labwork 40%

 

Group

  • Project 30%

 

Completion criteria:

Students are required to:

 

  • Fulfill 75% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
