Course Overview

This module introduces the students to basic electronic design and construction of prototypes. Students will have the opportunity for real world application in assembling and testing electronic display boards, smart tracking robot cars, Bluetooth speakers, water detectors and night light activation circuit.

 

It will be conducted within a duration of 30 hours with a class size of 20.

 

OBJECTIVES OF THIS MODULE

 

  • Develop students’ understanding of basic electronic design and the construction of prototypes
  • Provide opportunities for students to assemble and test various electronic devices such as display boards, smart tracking robot cars, Bluetooth speakers, water detectors and night light activation circuits

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

 

  1. Make use of simple lab tools and lab equipment
  2. Patch simple breadboard circuitry
  3. Set and use electronic equipment to make measurements
  4. Identify and test electronic passive and active components
  5. Assemble interesting electronic display board project
  6. Assemble and test circuit boards for water detection and light activation in dark environment
  7. Apply soldering and de-soldering techniques
  8. Assemble and test a line tracker robot
  9. Assemble and test a Bluetooth speaker system

 

Students will be assessed on the following criteria:

 

Individual

  • Class Participation - 5%
  • Assignment 1 - 10%
  • Assignment 2 - 15%
  • Project 1 - 20%
  • Project 2 - 30%

 

Group

  • Lab work - 20%

 

Completion criteria:

Students are required to:

 

  • Fulfill 75% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
