Course Overview

Want to learn more about common ailments and how to treat them? Then, this is the ideal module to equip you with all the necessary skills! Created to educate on self-medication, this module also introduces you to the products and services available at a pharmacy. You will learn about common ailments, self-treatment with over-the-counter (OTC) medications, principles of optimising drug therapy as well as proper self-medication. You will also get a chance to make your own creams, capsules and antiseptic solution! Join us to indulge in the world of pharmacy and drugs!

 

It will be conducted within a duration of 30 hours with a class size of 20.

 

OBJECTIVES OF THIS MODULE

 

Aims of this module:

 

  • introduce the products and services available in pharmacies.
  • state the principles of optimizing drug therapy.
  • enhance awareness on over the counter (OTC) medications.
  • provide the basic understanding of common minor ailments.
  • educate on responsible and proper self-medication.

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

 

  • list the products and services available in pharmacies.
  • differentiate the roles of healthcare professionals and self in personal health care.
  • state the principles of optimizing drug therapy.
  • demonstrate examples of responsible self-medication.
  • appraise various resources of information on OTC medication and self-medication.
  • list the common dosage forms and packaging of OTC medications.
  • identify the types of information on OTC medication labels.
  • describe the causes and symptoms of fever, minor aches and pain as well as OTC preparations for their relief.
  • describe the causes and symptoms of cough and common cold as well as OTC preparations for their relief.
  • describe the causes and symptoms of common skin problems as well as OTC preparations for their relief.
  • describe the causes and symptoms of common gastrointestinal complaints as well as OTC preparations for their relief.

 

Students will be assessed based on the following criteria:

 

  • Tests and Quizzes - 35% (individual)
  • Project - 35% (30% group, 5% individual)
  • Practical - 30% (individual)

 

Completion criteria:

 

Students are required to:

 

  • Fulfill 75% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
