Course Overview

This course provides participants with exceptional and practical skills in cybersecurity. Students will discover how to protect their own personal computers with Firewalls and antivirus software. They will also learn how to set up secure connections through the internet for their homes. Students will also learn to identify if a website or public wifi in a mall or F&B outlet is malicious. Through this course, students will learn the basic skills to manage viruses, worms, malware, spyware, ransomware. In the process of this, the students will be skilled in keeping their personal computer free from infection. This course also covers information about encryption and the proper ways to secure data on a hard disk drive/solid state device to prevent hackers from performing unauthorised actions. Through the course, students are exposed to forensics tools used by cyber investigators and various technologies in cybersecurity by visiting the School’s Malware Analysis Centre and the Cyber Range.

It will be conducted within a duration of 30 hours with a class size of 20.

  3. Analysis of cybersecurity incidents

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

 

  1. have an understanding of cybersecurity concepts and malicious viruses such as malware, spyware, ransomware etc and the impact of these on their personal computing devices;

  2. know how to protect their personal computers using firewalls and antivirus software; various encryption schemes and their use for wifi, data protection of hard disk drives etc;

  3. understand how to safely surf the internet from home and in malls or F&B outlets.
  4. understand the psychological make-up of cyber hackers and how to recognise when sniffing, snooping or attacking of an information system takes place. 

     

Students will be assessed against the following criteria:

Completion criteria:

Students are required to:

 

  • Fulfill 75% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
