Course Overview

Can you imagine the scientist working in the lab, healing broken bones, bad burns, blindness, deafness, heart damage, worn joints, nerve damage, and much, much more? Or constructing the skin from a patient's own cells? Exciting advances in medical biotechnology are set to improve the quality of healthcare you will receive in the future.

 

It will be conducted within a duration of 30 hours with a class size of 20.

 

OBJECTIVES OF THIS MODULE

 

This module introduces you to the exciting fields of stem cell, gene therapy and regenerative medicine. You will learn about applications, methodologies and the controversies associated with these areas. Through these sessions, you will also gain an overview of the great potential of stem cell, gene therapy and regenerative medicine.

 

Note: This module will be scheduled over 1 week during the common polytechnic and secondary schools’ vacation.

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

 

  • Describe phases of cell growth. 
  • Describe the procedures of generating stem cells. 
  • Differentiate therapeutic and reproductive cloning. 
  • Define regenerative medicine. 
  • List examples of how regenerative medicine can successfully change the quality of healthcare. 
  • Perform basic cell culture techniques. 
  • Describe the purpose of gene therapy. 
  • List the applications of gene therapy. 
  • Discuss the ethical issues involved in using stem cells, cloning and gene therapy.
  • Perform the detection of inherited mutated genes as a genetic counsellor.

 

Students will be assessed based on the following criteria:

 

Individual component:

 

  • Quiz 1: 30%
  • Quiz 2: 20%
  • Post lab: 10%
  • Class participation: 10%

 

Group component:

 

  • Project/Presentation: 30%

 

 

Completion criteria:

 

Students are required to:

 

  • Fulfill 75% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
