Course Overview

This AEM aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to create smart devices such as Wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and to develop mobile application that can monitor and control these devices. Students will also get to appreciate the role of Virtual Reality (VR) in IoT applications by preparing a 3D environment for viewing on VR viewer.


It will be conducted within a duration of 30 hours with a class size of 20.




  • Equip students with knowledge and skills in using hardware and software tools to design and create smart devices such as Wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
  • Guide students to develop mobile applications that can monitor and control these devices.
  • Provide students with the skills necessary to prepare a 3D environment for viewing on Virtual Reality (VR) viewer.

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:


  1. Create smart and interactive devices using an embedded platform.
  2. Develop mobile applications to wirelessly control smart devices on the embedded platform
  3. Create a 3D environment using 3D assets in a game engine.
  4. Deploy a 3D environment to the Virtual Reality (VR) viewer.


Students will be assessed on the following criteria:



  • Class Participation          10%
  • Labwork 1                        15%
  • Labwork 2                        15%
  • Quiz                                  20%



  • Mini-Project                     40%


Completion criteria:

Students are required to:


  • Fulfill 75% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
