Course Overview

Are you familiar with the saying, ‘Water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink?” Do you know that 358 million people in Africa do not have access to safe water as an essential for life. It highlights the sources of water in nature and explores water processing technology, including that of waste water, through an array of lectures, interactive tutorials, creative project work and hands-on practical sessions. Students will also analyse the quality of water in terms of its physical, chemical and microbiological properties and discuss the various uses of water in everyday life. You will never take your H20 for granted again!

 

It will be conducted within a duration of 30 hours with a class size of 20.

 

OBJECTIVES OF THIS MODULE

 

The aims of this subject are to provide students with the basic understanding of the:

 

1. properties of water
2. physical, chemical and microbiological quality of water
3. technology for water treatment

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

 

a. Describe the physical and chemical properties of water

b. Differentiate the sources, roles and quality of water

c. Explain microbiological quality of various sources of water

d. List common waterborne pathogens, sources of water contamination available and their characteristics

e. Explain and perform simple physical, chemical and microbiological analysis of water samples

f. Explain the technology used in conventional water treatment, water reclamation processes, desalination and NEWater production

g. Develop a working water treatment device using simple household materials

 

Students will be assessed against the following criteria:

 

  • Class participation: 10%
  • Test: 20 % (individual)
  • Project: 20% (group)
  • Practicals:50 % (individual)

 

Completion criteria:

 

Students are required to:

 

  • Fulfill 75% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
