The Ministry of Health (MOH) and SkillsFuture SG, has worked with Temasek Polytechnic (TP) to set up a new 3-month Molecular Diagnostic Training Programme to recruit and train suitable candidates to become entry-level Medical Lab Technicians. This programme is to train up more lab manpower to meet the increasing demand for molecular diagnostic work with the ongoing pandemic and future healthcare needs. The nation is ramping up testing capacity to support further opening up of borders and economic recovery.
This course comprises a 1-week foundation training followed by 11 weeks of on-the-job work attachment (OJT) at a host laboratory.
Candidates under this training programme will be supported with course fee funding and Trainees are provided with S$2,500 training allowance# per month during the course (total of $7,500 over 3 months).
Trainees under this training programme are NOT required to serve bond upon completion of programme.

Job Placement after completion of Programme:
- Candidates will assume different positions that commensurate with their qualification and working experience in a company.
- Selection of candidates is at the discretion of the participating companies and participating companies will contact their shortlisted candidates for interview.
Candidates who are enrolled into programme successfully are to sign a training agreement with TP.
Candidate must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident;
- Fulfilled National Service obligation (for Males);
- Applicant should not be holding a bond obligation with any organisation
- Possess either of the following qualification:
(a) Medical laboratory science diploma (3 years)
(b) Biomedical science diploma or equivalent.
Classroom and practical lessons.
Topics include laboratory safety, PPE, fundamental techniques in aliquoting lab specimens, RNA extraction technique and operation of relevant laboratory equipment.
On-the-job training (OJT) via work attachment at a host laboratory.
The OJT work attachment offers a real-life work experience at the host laboratory where trainees will follow the work schedule of the laboratory staff. The work hours may include day/afternoon/overnight shifts across days of the week including weekends and public holidays.
The Medical Laboratory Technicians carries out scientific medical laboratory examinations on blood and bodily fluids in hospital laboratories and independent diagnostic laboratories using advanced procedures and equipment.

Dr Amaladoss Anburaj
Dr Amaladoss Anburaj joined School of Applied Science, Temasek Polytechnic (TP) as a Research Scientist in 2012 and is currently a lecturer in the Diploma in Medical Biotechnology. He teaches Molecular Biology, Molecular Diagnostics and Synthetic Biology modules.
His research focusses on development of low cost onsite diagnostic kits for aquaculture, veterinary and human disease detection. Prior to joining TP, he taught biochemistry and biotechnology at masters’ level at various institutions in India before doing his postdoctoral research at Nanyang Technological University in 2004. He had then continued his research on malaria at New Jersey Medical School, New Jersey, USA and Singapore MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART). Raj also served as Visiting Scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) between 2008 and 2012.
