Course Overview

This course will cover the major processes found in a petroleum refinery involved in the refining of crude oil to yield various important petroleum products and petrochemicals. Basic chemistry and unit operations involving the manufacturing processes of these products will be covered together with their applications.

 

 

Objectives

 

This subject aims to equip students with the basic knowledge and skills to:

  • explain the various principles of unit operations found in a typical petroleum refinery and petrochemical plant.
  • apply principles of various unit operations for trouble shooting purposes.

Entry Requirements

Applicants applying for modular units which are drawn from existing full diploma or post-diploma programmes will have the same minimum entry requirements as the full qualifications.

Modes of Assessment

 

  • Assignments – assess student’s understanding of key concepts covered in lectures, their ability to solve the application questions.

  • Tests / Quizzes – measure students’ understanding of key concepts and application of concepts learnt for each topic.

  • Class Participation – measure students’ attitudes and discipline towards learning in terms of completion of assignments and active participation in discussions.

 

 

Certification

 

Upon successful completion of the modular unit, students will be awarded a Statement of Result which can count towards the attainment of the Diploma in Applied Science (Chemical Technology).
