Course Overview

The subject will take a deeper look at structural, physiological, and functional changes occurring during adulthood and the implications of these on older adults’ well-being. The subject examines key methods for the design, conduct and evaluation of individualized exercise programmes aimed at maintaining balance and strength, preventing falls and improving functional independence as people age in the community.

 

 

Objectives

 

Students will be able to:

1. Describe the functional changes that occur with age and the links with physical activities

2. Explain the benefits and recommendations of physical activity for overall wellbeing as a person ages

3. Compare global practices and trends in exercise programmes for older adults

4. Understand the key principles for the development of exercise programmes

5. Design a simple exercise programme to meet the needs of older adults.

Entry Requirements

Applicants applying for modular units which are drawn from existing full diploma or post-diploma programmes will have the same minimum entry requirements as the full qualifications.

Upon successful completion of the modular unit, students will be awarded a Statement of Result which can count towards the attainment of the Specialist Diploma in Gerontology (Optimal Ageing Practice).
