Course Overview

The Work-Study Certificate leading to the part-time Diploma in Applied Science (Veterinary Technology) is a 12-month programme targeted primarily at local fresh ITE graduates from relevant full-time applied sciences-related courses of study. It aims to equip participants with the necessary animal related skills for animal work at biomedical, veterinary and pet industries. The objectives would be:


  • to train participants to be competent in veterinary diagnostics, and areas necessary for work in veterinary clinics, hospitals and other veterinary organisations, and
  • to equip participants with skills and knowledge related to animal care and welfare for work in laboratory animal facilities, pet shops, aquaculture centres, etc.


Academic Progression

Upon completing the 2 Modular Certificates (MCs) under this programme, graduates have the option to undertake the remaining 3 MCs to obtain the part-time Diploma in Applied Science (Veterinary Technology).

Application/Entry Requirement


Eligibility Criteria

Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents who are within three years of either graduation from the ITE or the Operationally Ready Date (ORD) for National Servicemen from the following full-time programmes are eligible to apply.

GPA Requirement 

●      GPA≥ 2.0 for NITEC graduates

●      No GPA requirement for Higher NITEC graduates


Current employees who have graduated or ORD for more than 3 years but within the 5 years from the date of graduation or ORD may be considered for the programme on a case-by-case basis but will not be eligible for any sign-on incentives.

Only for Singapore Citizens who are fresh ITE or Polytechnic graduates hired by Participating Companies and officially commenced the Work-Study Certificate programme within 3 years of graduation or ORD.

What You'll Learn

Participants are required to complete a total of 2 skills-based Modular Certificates (MCs). Each MC can be completed in 1 semester, i.e. 6 months. A certificate will be issued once the requirements for each MC are met. Participants must complete the programme within 12 months.

1 Animal Anatomy and Physiology

This subject covers a fundamental introduction to veterinary anatomy using systemic, applied and comparative anatomy. It also covers basic veterinary physiology in correlation to the structure-function relationship of the various organ systems.

2 Animal Nutrition, Feeds & Feeding

This subject covers a fundamental introduction to basic concept of animal nutrition and nutritive requirements of animals (aquatic and terrestrial). It also covers animals’ feed formulation as well as the feeding behaviors of the animals.

3 Animal Care, Husbandry & Behaviour

This subject covers an introduction to the husbandry, care and behavior of animals, with emphasis on domestic companion species. The fundamental principles and practical application will be elaborated in the sub-topics of handling and restraint, animal housing and environmental conditions, animal management with respect to behavior under different conditions, application of first aid and wound management, breed identification, and preventative health programs.

1 Veterinary Surgery & Anaesthesia

The subject provides basic knowledge and understanding of aviation legislation and human factors for technicians and engineers working in Singapore aviation industry. It is also very relevant for students studying for their Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore SAR-66 equivalent modules for their aircraft maintenance licenses. Knowledge of this subject has a significant impact on the safety standards and responsibilities expected of the personnel working in the aviation industry and holders of aircraft maintenance licenses.

2 Clinic Pathology

This subject introduces students to diagnostic laboratory procedures, and covers the basic knowledge and technical skills to perform various tests used for the evaluation of health and disease. It highlights the techniques of sample collection, as well as the importance of proper sample handling and preservation. The processes and principles used to evaluate organ function, including the liver, kidneys and pancreas will also be covered.progress of a project till completion. A standard Project Management software package will be used in the subject to enhance students’ learning.

3 Anatomic Pathology

This subject covers basic general pathology principles, and the skills required for necropsy and histotechnology. This knowledge will be consolidated by studying various aspects of some of the common diseases found in domestic small and large animal species, including the aetiology, modes of transmission, clinical signs, diagnostic and treatment methods.

Upon completing the Work-Study Certificate, participants have the option to complete the remaining 3 MCs to obtain the part-time Diploma in Applied Science (Veterinary Technology):

1 Basic Microbiology

This subject investigates the important fundamentals of microbiology and its relevance to the food, biotechnology and veterinary industries. It covers the types of microorganisms, their cultivation and growth as well as the control.

2 Cell Biology

This subject covers the biology of cells of higher organisms, including structure-function relationships of cellular membranes and internal organelles, cell cycle and nuclear division, transport mechanisms and cell communication, cell motility and the cytoskeleton and cell death. Basic laboratory skills involving the study of cell structures with the use of cell staining techniques and microscopy will also be introduced in this subject.

3 Biochemistry

This subject introduces the fundamentals of organic chemistry of biological importance and the essential biomolecules present in biological systems. The structures and properties of biomolecules, as well as the basic concepts of bioenergetics and metabolism of important biochemical pathways will also be introduced to illustrate how these interactions lead to life processes.

1 Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology

This subject covers a fundamental introduction in veterinary pharmacology and toxicology using systemic approaches. Clinical and research applications of the drugs will be discussed in relation to the drug effects and mechanisms of action. The mechanism of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics from different classes of clinical drugs will also be covered.

2 Animal Health and Diseases

This subject covers an introduction to animal diseases of significance to veterinary and laboratory technicians. The subject will introduce students to pathogenic agents, their modes of action, and the observed symptoms.

3 Veterinary Practice Management

This subject covers the basic concepts of managing the physical and human resource aspects of veterinary practices. Topics include management of veterinary facilities and human resources, client care and marketing. Students will be taught the skills necessary to perform various roles which include that of record keeper, receptionist, stock keeper, drug dispenser and animal nurse.

1 Fish Reproduction

Laboratory Animal Science & Technology (LAST) This subject covers knowledge and skills in the area of laboratory animal science and technology. Students will learn about the care and use of common laboratory rodents and animals for research; operation and maintenance of animal facility, animal biosafety levels; disease prevention and control as well as occupational health and safety.

2 Aquatic Care, Health and Diseases

This subject covers various aspects of aquatic care, health and diseases. Topics will include care and husbandry, health management and good practices, diseases, treatment, control and prevention of fish diseases. Various laboratory and diagnostic test used for identifying fish disease pathogens will also be covered.

3 Animal Genetics and Genomics

This subject is designed to provide basic theoretical knowledge and laboratory techniques in molecular genetics and genomics. It covers foundational concepts and their applications in genetics, including heredity, the nature of deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA), the central dogma of molecular biology and genomics. The subject also trains students to apply the technical skills required to isolate and analyze DNA, including computational bioinformatics tools for evaluating DNA sequences.

Modes of Assessment

The subjects in this course are either examination or non-examination based, incorporating both formative and summative assessments. The assessment framework will include a range of coursework assignments, as well as mid-term test and end-of-semester examinations.

Career Opportunities

At the entry level, the job position is Junior Veterinary Technician1. Upon completing the programme, graduates can look forward to taking up some of these possible types of job roles1:

Graduates may also look forward to wage increment and role expansion in their workplace, subject to their work performance.

Selection of applicants is at the discretion of the participating companies and participating companies will contact their shortlisted applicants for interview. Applicants have the right to reject the interview if they do not wish to be employed by the company who contacted them.


Only applicants who are successfully hired and placed on the Work-Study Certificate programme by the participating companies will be invited to submit an online application for the courses.

Course Fees

Course fees will be sponsored by company should candidates be placed under the Work-Study Certificate programme.
