Course Overview

The Specialist Diploma in Veterinary Wellness Care is a 12-month Work-Study Post-Diploma programme targeted primarily at local fresh Polytechnic graduates from relevant full-time applied sciences-related courses of study. It aims to equip participants with skills in veterinary nursing, rehabilitation and physiotherapy. With the increasing focus on complementary and holistic therapies and rehabilitation in the veterinary services, graduates with these skills will be ready to meet the growing needs of this industry.

Entry Requirements

Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents who are within three years of either graduation OR the Operationally Ready Date (ORD) for National Servicemen from the following full-time programmes.

 

The Sign-on Incentive is only applicable to Singapore Citizens.

What You'll Learn

To be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Veterinary Wellness Care, participants are required to complete a total of 2 Post-Diploma Certificates (PDCs). A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of each PDC.

AVW0101 Animal Communication, Behaviour and Enrichment

This subject covers an introduction to the communication in domestic companion species. Students will study the fundamentals of companion animal behaviour, and learn a variety of behaviour modification methods that are recognized for use. Students will also learn the basics of environmental enrichment in these species.

AVW0102 Animal Nursing Care and Health

This subject covers different forms of veterinary nursing care, such as breed specific and life stage care; and veterinary care in companion animals. There will be a greater elaboration on the principles of veterinary nursing, with a focus on surgical and medical nursing. An overview of animal health including body condition scoring, pain assessment, zoonoses and legislation will also be covered.

AVW0103 Animal Rescue Care

The subject covers responsible handling and first aid care for wild and domestic animals, equine, laboratory and aquatic animals. Procedures on appropriate sheltering, evacuation, transportation, feeding and use of suitable equipment or devices for performing rescue and disaster preparedness will be covered. Euthanasia criteria, carcass documentation and disposal would also be discussed.

AVW0201 Fundamentals of Complementary Veterinary Medicine and Care

This subject covers the basics of the types of complementary medicine commonly encountered in veterinary medicine. These include herbal medicine and nutraceuticals, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and complementary physiotherapy modalities. An overview of their individual and/or combined application(s) with conventional western veterinary medicine to provide a holistic treatment plan for patients will be discussed.

AVW0202 Animal Rehabilitation and Wellness Techniques

This subject covers animal biomechanics, exercise physiology and physiotherapy of small and large animals. Topics include therapy and exercises for general health maintenance and rehabilitation. Physical assessment and wellness programme planning for rehabilitation, supportive and palliative care will also be covered.

AVW0203 Diet and Nutrition for Rehabilitation and Wellness

This subject covers the nutritional requirements of animals and consideration factors for planning a diet specific to animal breeds, age and health conditions. Alternative diets, dietary supplements and herbal nutrition for wellness will also be covered.

Modes of Assessment

 

The assessment would be based on 100% coursework with written and practical tests, case studies, assignments or projects.

 

Career Opportunities

The entry level job position is Junior Veterinary Technician1. Upon completing the programme, graduates may look forward to taking on a Veterinary Technician1 job role, as well as wage increment and role expansion in their workplace, subject to their work performance.

Selection of applicants is at the discretion of the participating companies and participating companies will contact their shortlisted applicants for interview. Applicants have the right to reject the interview if they do not wish to be employed by the company who contacted them.

 

Only applicants who are hired successfully and placed on this programme by the participating companies will be invited to submit an online application for the Work-Study Post-Diploma Courses.

Course fees payable is based on per Post-Diploma Certificate.

Course fees will be reviewed by MOE on an annual basis and adjusted accordingly.

MOE subsidy will not be applicable for students who repeat a module or semester.
