Choose Business Studies Grouping (BSG) if you want to give yourself choices.

This common first-year course gives you the unique opportunity of discovering your strengths, interest and career aspirations as you encounter various core business subjects in the first two semesters. Receive solid grounding in core business knowledge and expertise. Learn how to manage people and processes, write and present effectively, understand the economic environment, and how to measure business performance among other essential business skills. You will then be in a good position to decide on any one of the three diploma courses that you would like to continue in:

Further Education

While many of our graduates join the workforce or start his/her own business upon graduation, others move on to pursue their further studies, either locally or overseas. Many of our alumni have done us proud in local universities such as NUS, NTU and SMU. In terms of overseas universities, we have also seen our students shine in universities in Australia, Britain, America as well as Canada.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for consideration for admission, applicants must obtain 26 points or better for the net ELR2B2 aggregate score (i.e. English Language, 2 relevant subjects and best 2 other subjects, including CCA Bonus Points) and meet the minimum entry requirements of this course. CCA cannot be used to meet the minimum entry requirements.

Any three other subjects, excluding CCA Grades 1-6

To be eligible for selection, you must also have sat for at least one of the following subjects: Art/Art & Design, Business Studies, Combined Humanities, Commerce, Commercial Studies, Economics, Geography, History, Higher Art, Higher Music, Introduction to Enterprise Development, Literature in English/ Chinese/Malay/Tamil, Media Studies (English/Chinese Language), Media Studies (Chinese Language), Music, Principles of Accounts.

This subject provides you with an understanding of the core accounting principles underlying accounting practice; from the preparation of accounting entries to the financial statements of businesses. It also focuses on how various businesses report the results of their activities in the financial statements.

BLO1001

The subject provides an overview of descriptive and inferential statistics. It includes data description, basic concepts of probability, correlation and regression, probability distributions, estimation and hypothesis testing. The subject also covers the use of computer software application to perform statistical computation for data analysis and interpretation.

BBT1010

This subject covers fundamental computing and data analytics skills for businesses. A strong emphasis is placed in exposing students to office productivity tools which can aid in decision making as well as solving business problems through data manipulation, modelling and visualisation.

MCR1001

This Career Readiness programme comprises three core subjects – Personal Management, Career Preparation and Career Management. It seeks to help you understand your career interests, values, personality and skills for career success. It also equips you with the necessary skills for seeking and securing jobs, and to develop professional work ethics.

BCS1011

In this subject, you will learn how to conduct research for relevant information and validate information sources. You will also learn to recognise and avoid plagiarism, and follow standard citation and referencing guidelines when presenting information. In the course of learning, you will be required to plan, prepare and present information appropriately in written and oral form.

LEA1011

LEAP 1, 2 and 3 are three fundamental subjects that seek to cultivate in you, the attitude, skills and knowledge for the development of your leadership competencies.  This character-based leadership programme enables you to develop your life-skills through establishing personal core values, which will become the foundation for your leadership credibility and influence.

BGS1002

This subject provides essential skills and knowledge to prepare you for an overseas experience. You will examine the elements of culture and learn the key principles of cross-cultural communication. In addition, you will gain an appreciation and awareness of the political, economic, technological and social landscape to function effectively in a global environment.

BIN1001

This subject is designed for learners from all disciplines to embrace innovation in either their specialised field or beyond.  You will first be introduced to the Design Thinking framework and learn how to develop problem statements and ideate solutions.  Next, you will discover the tools for prototyping and innovation, such as 3D printing and laser cutting at TP’s Makerspace+ facility.

BEC1001

This subject provides you with an understanding of the broad framework of microeconomic analysis. Conceptual tools of economic analysis such as scarcity, demand and supply will be introduced, followed by a study of consumer behaviour, product market and resource market.

BEC1002

This subject provides you with an understanding of the broad framework of macroeconomic analysis. The equilibrium level of national income, business cycle, unemployment, inflation, and monetary and fiscal policies will be discussed, followed by a study of international trade.

BRM1005

This subject provides an understanding of the basic concepts and practices of modern marketing. It focuses on the marketing role and the tools utilised by marketers in developing the appropriate marketing mix for target market segments.

BBS1001

This subject covers the key management functions of planning, organising, leading and controlling. The subject addresses the impact of environmental factors that affect business, the relevance of corporate social responsibility and business ethics, and international management in an organisation. It emphasises the roles, responsibilities and challenges faced by supervisors/ manages in an organisation.

LSW1002

This subject will help you develop both the physical and technical skills in your chosen sports or fitness activities. Through a structured curriculum that facilitates group participation, practice sessions and mini competitions, you will learn to build lifelong skills such as resilience, leadership, communication and teamwork. Physical activity sessions will be supplemented by health-related topics to provide you with a holistic approach to healthy living.

Lou Terence
Course Manager, Business Studies Grouping

Terence graduated with a Bachelor in Accountancy and was a Certified Public Accountant before he became a lecturer.  Work as an auditor, accountant and finance manager was exciting but Terence found greater satisfaction in training young professionals and seeing them grow.  Before joining Temasek Polytechnic, Terence was a volunteer trainer with the Ministry of Economy & Finance (Cambodia) and consultant to an organisation affiliated to the World Bank.

With a team, Terence currently oversees a common Year 1 course in the School of Business.  Sometimes, he counsels and guides students through their challenges, and is glad that his training in social sciences and psychology came in useful.

Terence enjoys baking in his spare time, saying that it is equally important to feed the body as well as the soul.

Nancy Tan
Section Head

Nancy has a Master of Social Sciences (Applied Economics) from National University of Singapore. Prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic as an Economic lecturer, Nancy had six years of working experience in marketing and leasing of retail and office space. Her work involved the negotiation of lease agreements with corporate clients.

In her free time, Nancy loves to travel and exercise.  She is passionate about keeping fit and healthy and often participates in group exercises and runs with friends and colleagues to build friendship and working relationships.

Wong Nee Tat
Section Head

Nee Tat specialises in Accounting, Economics and Management subjects. He possesses extensive business consulting and managerial experience gained from his previous positions as Director of Business Consulting, Assistant Vice-President of Strategy and Product Development, Senior Business Consultant, and Finance Manager.

He has consulted for many organisations in diverse industries in wide ranging areas. He has also published in numerous international refereed and local journals. His publications have been featured in The Business Times, The Straits Times, Today, Channelnewsasia.com and TV news.

A Chartered Accountant, Nee Tat holds an MBA from the Nanyang Technological University as well as a Master of Social Sciences (Applied Economics) and a good honours degree in Business Administration from the National University of Singapore.

Kenneth Fong
Senior Lecturer

Kenneth has a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Birmingham and a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) degree from the National University of Singapore, majoring in Economics.  Prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic, he had eight years of experience in the airline industry, working as an Administrative Officer in Singapore Airlines in areas of Marketing and Training.

As a Senior Lecturer in TP School of Business, Kenneth specialises in teaching Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, drawing from his extensive experience in the airline industry. He is also actively involved in the area of continuing education & training, as a lecturer as well as a programme coordinator.

Kenneth’s interests include economics and business research. In his leisure time, Kenneth enjoys sports like tennis, and is a keen travel photographer.

Khoo Sor Hwa
Senior Lecturer

Sor Hwa graduated with a Bachelor in Business Administration (Honours) from the National University of Singapore.  Before joining Temasek Polytechnic, she held management positions in DBS Bank, where her last held designation was that of Vice-President.

Sor Hwa contributed in Temasek Polytechnic in various management positions, and has experience in teaching subjects in the areas of banking, finance, management and economics.

An animal lover, she loves spending time with her family, reading and coastal walks.

Tan Ee Ling
Senior Lecturer

Ee Ling has a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and a Master of Social Sciences in Economics from NUS. She has more than ten years of teaching experience in Economics and management related subjects. Besides teaching polytechnic students and working adults, Ee Ling is also involved in administration of test and exams matters for the school.

Prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic, Ee Ling has more than five years of experience in the field of human resource management. Specialising in the areas of recruitment and compensation and benefits, she has worked for bank and life insurance companies as HR Officer and has handled a large array of HR functions.

Besides teaching, her areas of interest include travelling and providing career advisement to students.

Carmen Lee
Lecturer

Carmen has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Economics (1st Class Hons) from the University of Leicester, UK.  She stayed on to work in a London audit firm for 1 year before returning to take on an airline relationship manager role with Singapore Airport Terminal Services Ltd. Carmen then moved on to become an Assistant Director with the Ministry of Trade and Industry. She joined Temasek Polytechnic as a Section Head at the International Relations and Industry Services before her switch to pursue her passion in teaching at School of Business.

Carmen is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Behavioural Science with the London School of Economics and is particularly interested in the areas of decision making and behavioural change interventions. She hopes to be able to apply what she has learnt to help students make better decisions for themselves in their professional and personal capacities.

As a graduate of Temasek Polytechnic, Carmen feels that her lecturers have a big impact on her life through the care they have shown her and also in believing in her abilities. She hopes to be a source of encouragement and inspiration to her students just as they have been to her.

Hansen Yeong Meng Fei
Lecturer

Hansen holds a Bachelor in Arts and Science (Hons) degree from NUS, specialising in Economics and History, as well as a Master in International Political Economy from the Rajaratnam School of International Studies at NTU. Hansen also received a Master in Education from Sheffield University.

Hansen has 3 years of working experience with Citibank and HSBC, specialising in cash operations, including foreign exchange and international transfers. At HSBC, he managed a team in Singapore and India responsible for cash movements from Singapore to all parts of the world.  

Hansen is deeply interested in global Economics and the manner in which knowledge from the subject allow learners to understand how the world works around them, and thereby making good choices to improve their lives. Hansen is also interested in the pedagogy of teens and young adults, especially in the relationship between their learning and outcome in their labour market entry.

Sharon Quek-Lee
Lecturer

Sharon holds an MBA with merit from the University of Manchester, Alliance Manchester Business School. She has also achieved double Bachelor of Arts degrees in Economics and Business Administration (majoring in Finance) cum laude in the USA as a full-time student within a record time of less than 3 years.

Sharon has more than 10 years of various corporate work experiences. She started her career as a Regional Treasury Analyst at the American Express Regional Treasury Centre. She then progressed on as a Research Strategist reporting to the Chief Strategist at Strategic Intelligence, a business research group. She was also in global business development as part of a Singapore-based mergers and acquisitions team at Fortis Inc., a financial group of companies based in the Benelux. It was after several more years of work in managing marketing and operations of investment products and investment education, culminating in her last position as an Associate Vice President of a wealth management group that Sharon decided it was time to give her wealth of knowledge gained back to society as a business lecturer at Temasek Polytechnic.

At Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Business, she teaches both the full-time students and part-time working adults in Economics, Finance and other Business subjects.

Wong Lily
Lecturer

Lily has a Master of Social Sciences (Economics) and an economics honours degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS). She has more than ten years of experience in teaching economics at the diploma and undergraduate levels.

Pursuing a strong interest in economics and academic research, she spent several years as a research associate at INSEAD. Her research interests are in applied economics and game theory.  At INSEAD, she also has more than ten years of experience teaching microeconomics and statistics for MBA programmes.
