Final-year students, Farhan B Hanis, from the Apparel Design & Merchandising course, and Rebecca Sim Yen Yee, from the Logistics & Operations Management course, did TP proud by winning Gold medals in the recent 13th WorldSkills Singapore National Competition.
Farhan competed in the Fashion Technology skill area, while Rebecca competed in the Freight Forwarding skill area. Both will represent Singapore at the 45th WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia in 2019.
Farhan believes that fashion design is like modern alchemy where fabric transforms into beautiful and functional apparel. This keeps him fascinated and motivated as a designer, and aims to create work that is fresh and innovative, as well as commercially viable for today’s market. Farhan is presently training hard as he is representing Singapore at the upcoming ASEAN Skills Competition 2018, in Bangkok, Thailand, next month.
“I’m determined to use this ASEAN platform to learn and grow more as a designer, as well as take the opportunity to network with competitors from other countries, so as to expand my social circle as well as to get to know what other countries have to offer in terms of fashion design,” he said.
All the best to you, Farhan!
Rebecca in action at her Freight Forwarding category
Rebecca is extremely thankful to Mr Benson Tan, her lecturer and coach, for training, guiding and encouraging her, she is also very proud of herself for making it this far.
“I love competing due to the satisfaction and the adrenaline rush I get. I am really excited and look forward to competing again,” she said.
Rebecca is looking forward to the intensive hands-on training she will receive during her upcoming internship, as well expand her knowledge and understanding of the freight forwarding industry from industry experts, her lecturers and her coach.
In addition to Rebecca’s gold medal win, it was a clean sweep for TP in the Freight Forwarding skill area – the silver and bronze medals went to Chew See Yan (Logistics & Operations Management) and Larissa Ang (Aviation Management & Services) respectively.
TP’s WSS contingent this year, was the largest to date, with 38 students participating in 15 skill areas. Apart from the two Gold medals, TP students also bagged six Silver medals in the skill areas of Aircraft Maintenance, Restaurant Service, Web Design & Development, Fashion Technology and Freight Forwarding, five Bronze medals in the skill areas of Cooking, Electronics, Mobile Robotics and Freight Forwarding.
