Students from the School of Informatics & IT garnered two awards at the Junior Achievement Company of the Year (JA COY) Competition 2017, which was held at Nanyang Junior College on 27 January 2018.
A team of four Diploma in Financial Business Informatics (FBI) students, known as Team Design.Ü, emerged as 1st Runner-Up and clinched the Best Video Award in the JA COY Competition 2017. The team comprised one second year student, Sabrina Malik Timboel Manik, and three first year students, Julia Low, Eileen Goh Qing Ying and Ang Rui Yan.
To prepare for the competition, Team Design.Ü went through a 7-month programme where they were mentored by volunteers from ExxonMobil Singapore and their lecturer, Mr Alfred Teng. Under their mentorship, the team learnt how to start a company in a competitive environment, and picked up knowledge about the other functions in running a business.
They came up with a 4-in-1 multi-purpose bag called the TotePack. The competition required the team to complete a company financial report and set up a trade booth. They impressed the judges with their practical and sustainable product, social responsibility, as well as business operations. They also shared their entrepreneurship experience during the event.
The funds raised from this competition were used to organise learning journeys for the team’s beneficiary, the Ain Society, a voluntary welfare organisation that focuses on helping families with cancer-stricken members. They chose to work with Ain Society because the team wanted to help teenagers who are suffering from cancer and who are facing financial difficulties. The funds raised would also be donated to the TP Campus Care Network Fund.
