When Gim Aik joined the School of Informatics & IT (IIT) in 2015 to pursue the Diploma in Big Data Management & Governance, he never thought he would graduate as the top student of the pioneer batch.
When he started his first year in the polytechnic, he had no aspiration to excel. He was content to be an average student and get his diploma. However, the applied nature of the course appealed to Gim Aik and he found himself moving from an average performer to one who was excelling in his studies. Gim Aik’s taste of academic success encouraged him deeply and made him realise he actually possessed untapped capabilities. Encouraged by this, he put more effort into his studies and discovered a passion for problem solving. He was challenged by the case studies and projects he was assigned, and he appreciates how at TP he discovered ‘how to think, not what to think’.
When he was posted to GIC Pte Ltd, he was attached to the Business Analytics team. There, he was assigned to work on a real estate analytics project. Gim Aik built an application that is able to extract and process large amounts of web data and even perform language translations on the data. Gim Aik loved the challenge he was given at GIC and embraced the opportunity to learn new skills and technologies.
Gim Aik is now a highly motivated young man who possesses an insatiable thirst for knowledge. In his free time, he scours for information on the latest technologies and tries to keep abreast of technological trends. For instance, he sharpened his technical skills in order to help himself move more quickly into areas such as data analytics and artificial intelligence.
Gim Aik’s keen interest in learning beyond what is taught in the curriculum is admirable. He was selected for the Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA) of Singapore’s Industry Preparation for Pre-Graduates (iPREP) Programme in his Junior year. He has since undertaken professional certification courses including the Certified Data Engineer certificate by Pivotal which is a tough qualification to attain.
Gim Aik was also Captain of the IIT Dragonboat Team and gained the respect of his peers, organising training sessions and pacing the members so that they maintained high spirits and strong camaraderie.
Gim Aik graduates as the top student of the Diploma in Big Data Management & Governance (with Merit). On top of project prizes, he also receives the IMDA Excellence Award and the DELL EMC Computer Systems (South Asia) Course Gold Medal.
IIT offers six full time diploma courses. More information on these courses can be found here: http://www.tp.edu.sg/schools/iit
