Annual Report 2021/22

Highlights of the Year

Top TP achievements

A well-deserved feather in their caps

Ms Iman Tang

Mrs Sathish Sowmya

Each year, the President's Award for Teachers (PAT) recognises excellent educators for their role in motivating, inspiring and moulding the future of our nation. This year, TP School of Informatics & IT lecturer, Ms Iman Tang, was a worthy recipient of Singapore's highest accolade for the teaching fraternity. "I will never forget how my teachers made me feel, and I hope to make that kind of difference in the lives of others," said Ms Tang, who has been enriching the lives of TP students for over 15 years.

TP School of Engineering lecturer, Mrs Sathish Sowmya, was also honoured as a PAT 2021 finalist. "The nomination has instilled a greater sense of responsibility to give my best always," she said. Both our PAT Hall of Fame inductees participated at TP's signature Learning Academy (LA) Fest 2021, where they shared their teaching philosophies and practices with their peers in attendance.

TP’s super sixth

Did you know that since the inception of the Lee Hsien Loong Award for Outstanding All-Round Achievement (LHL-OAA) in 2009, half of its polytechnic recipients came from TP? In August 2021, Viyshnatulasiy D/O Manivannenin, our Diploma in Biotechnology alumna, became the sixth TP graduate presented with this prestigious award! "I am beyond grateful for the opportunities I was offered in TP, which pushed me out of my comfort zone to grow as an individual and as a leader. I am blessed to receive this award—it will drive me to work harder to achieve my goals and passion," she said.

The LHL-OAA is awarded to one Singaporean fresh graduate every year from each of the following four groups—Junior Colleges/Centralised Institutes, Institute of Technical Education, Polytechnics and Autonomous Universities. These individuals have excellent academic achievements and demonstrate the spirit of innovation and enterprise through their co-curricular activities or community work.

High-fives all round for TP School of Design

For the fifth year in a row, TP School of Design claimed the coveted crown of 'Institution of the Year' at the annual Crowbar Awards. Organised by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Singapore, Crowbar Awards is the only major student competition that celebrates the best creative, design and media works from institutions worldwide.

Celebrating TP’s ciNE65 awards sweep

ciNE65 is the largest national platform for film students and budding filmmakers to share our Singapore story through short films. Our Diploma in Digital Film & Television students dominated this year's edition, claiming Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Audience Choice categories. The night's highlight came when TP was presented with the Inter-School Challenge Trophy, our second top win in these awards!

TP’s skills galore

WorldSkills Singapore National Competition 2021 was held from 29 September to 9 October 2021 at the ITE Colleges and the five Polytechnics in 18 competition skills areas. Our young TP talents did us proud by claiming a commendable tally of four Gold, four Silver and four Bronze medals, and nine Medallions of Excellence.

Sporting action is back

Finally, after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the POL-ITE Games returned in 2021! Out of 32 sports categories, Team Temasek athletes brought home a total tally of 26 medals—15 Gold, three Silver and eight Bronze. In addition, our teams from Men's Dragon Boat, Women's Floorball, Men's and Women's Swimming, Taekwondo, and Men's and Women's Volleyball successfully defended their championship titles!

TP's swim team also competed in the ActiveSG Year-End Smash Swimming Competition 2021 at Our Tampines Hub. Competing against established swim clubs, Team Temasek won four Gold, three Silver and four Bronze medals.

Last but not least, TP's Kayak Racing team raced in the 2021 Singapore Mid-Distance Canoeing Championships at Marina Reservoir. Up against university competitors and club rowers, the team bagged a commendable tally of two Gold and two Silver medals.

Keep up your excellent work

In a virtual ceremony, TP School of Business and Senior Academic Mentor, Mr Steven Ng Chee Kuen (pictured centre), was honoured with the Exemplary SkillsFuture @ Public Service Award 2021. The award aptly recognises Steven's spirit of lifelong learning, picking up new and emerging skills, deepening existing capabilities and sharing his knowledge and skills widely with others.

These include conducting workshops to promote digital marketing skills to staff, students, and members of the public. Steven is also behind TP's most popular Micro-Learning Course, 12 Essentials of Digital Marketing.

Promoting mental health

Silver Ribbon (Singapore) is a registered non-profit organisation launched by the late former President S R Nathan to combat mental health stigma and encourage early help. In December 2021, we received the Silver Ribbon Mental Health Award under the School Institution category.

Mr Samuel Wee, Director of Student Support & Career Services, received the award from Ms Sun Xueling, Minister of State, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Social and Family Development. He also shared the institution's extensive efforts and initiatives to promote mental health within the TP community and beyond.

What’s new in TP

All “four” tomorrow’s workforce

To do our part in helping the nation meet the demands for a modern, future-ready workforce, TP launched a total of four new learning facilities. Each embraces the exciting opportunities of digitalisation and new technologies, and enhances the training of our PET and CET students.

New Learning Centre #1: TP Advanced Manufacturing Centre (TP AMC)

TP AMC is a fully integrated end-to-end manufacturing facility. Within its walls are an AI-enabled manufacturing line, a smart warehouse with an automated storage and order picking system, and a nerve centre that provides real-time analysis and data analytics optimisation.

TP AMC will train approximately 1,500 PET and 1,000 CET students annually for Singapore’s manufacturing sector. It will also support companies and industry partners in their Industry 4.0 transformation efforts through consultancy services and other projects.

New Learning Centre #2: Smart E-Commerce Centre (SMEC)

SMEC features three business units: 1st Avenue Omni, an unmanned lifestyle retail store selling products by local businesses and global brands, 1st Avenue Originals, TP’s gift shop and café that features a coffee-serving robot barista, and 1st Avenue Online, TP’s e-shop that combines and showcases the product offerings of the first two.

Our new, integrated retail learning facility will enhance TP's PET and CET curricula and training resources. It can also help strengthen enterprise capabilities by identifying potential digitalisation opportunities.

New Learning Centre #3: Malware Analysis Centre

A collaboration with ST Engineering, Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike, TP's Malware Analysis Centre is a fully functioning, learning facility operated entirely by TP’s Diploma in Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics students, such as Andrew Leng (pictured right).

“In this student-led service centre, the team helps our walk-in customers scan and remove any malware found in their laptops. Roles such as Centre Manager and Security Analyst are rotated among the team, so that each of us can be well-versed in these operations,” he shared.

New Learning Centre #4: Integrative Built Environment Centre (IBEC)

The most comprehensive set-up of its kind in a polytechnic, IBEC covers a wide range of related domains, specialising in the areas of digital architecture, intelligent building systems and smart facility management.

IBEC cements TP's support for the Singapore Green Plan and the BuildSG movement. Here, TP works closely with industry partners to enhance our PET curricula and CET upskilling programmes, train tomorrow's workforce in core engineering skills and engage in research and development projects.

Check out our new, winning start-ups

TP's Innovation & Entrepreneurship Department runs two structured incubation programmes annually to help equip our students and alumni with entrepreneurial ambitions. Over 170 participants attended this year. Two of the most promising ideas were awarded the StartupSG Founder Grant of $50,000 by Enterprise Singapore to facilitate the launch and development of their new business ventures.

The future lies in the clouds … of new technologies!

On 26 October 2021, TP signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with our long-standing collaborator, IBM Singapore. The agreement sees us partnering IBM in the set-up of the TP-IBM Technology Experience Centre to train TP students in Cloud Computing, Cloud Security and DevOps using IBM's Hybrid Cloud Enterprise Computing technology. Students will also access IBM's Education Course Learning materials and test new cloud platform solutions and innovations to enhance their skills.

Other TP accomplishments

Putting the FUN in Singapore’s NDP 2021 fun pack

Did you know that the National Day Parade (NDP) 2021 fun pack was inspired by the ubiquitous brown paper takeaway packaging used by local hawkers, and is made from sustainable materials? Also, it was created by a team of four TP Diploma in Product & Industrial Design students who wanted to showcase this aspect of our food culture to represent our shared Singapore spirit!

Developing SEN students across polytechnics and ITEs

TP and our partner, Sumitomo Life Insurance, launched the inaugural Talent Explorer Programme (TEP) on 13 September 2021. Sixty Special Education Needs (SEN) students across all the polytechnics and ITEs took part in this virtual four-week career exploratory programme featuring talks from industry professionals, accelerated foundation courses and skill development sessions.

Participants could select up to four tracks—Digital Marketing, Data Analytics, Sustainability and Talent Management—to align themselves with emerging professions and gain the skills to secure job opportunities in the future.

A man’s best friend indeed

TP embarked on a new pilot therapy programme with animal-assisted therapy specialists, Pawsibility, in March 2022. With the aid of a professionally trained therapy dog that participated in activities such as obstacle courses and puzzle-solving tasks, the programme helped boost the emotional resilience and self-confidence of our SEN students and those burdened with anxiety challenges.

A collection of our most precious memories

To support the digital preservation needs of TP, our library embarked on a major project to migrate from an on-premise archival system to a cloud-based digital system. Launched on 23 February 2022, the new TP Archives platform houses significant institutional memories, achievements, milestones and more. Content discovery is also intuitive, mobile responsive, and accessible on and off campus.

Spreading smiles through our community

For our volunteers, giving back is its own reward! This year, we are proud to share our new #TPCares projects and initiatives:

Project Refresh
On 24 April 2021, seven staff volunteers gave two rental units in Sengkang a facelift. It was a day well spent bonding with colleagues and friends for a worthwhile cause.

Adopt-A-Block
From 25 November to 11 December, more than 50 staff volunteers joined forces with students from the TP Community Service Club to contribute household items, and pack, transport and distribute care packs to 150 beneficiaries living in rental units at Bedok North.

Pertapis Centre for Women and Girls (PCWG)
Over 40 PCWG teen residents received new laptops and participated in TP's two-day virtual activities and workshops in December 2021. Their new devices were courtesy of a $40,000 sponsorship from SG Pools.

Senior Befriending Programme
March 2022 marked the start of this new programme, where TP staff volunteers will make regular visits to seniors residing in neighbouring Tampines HDB blocks and engage them in cheerful conversations.

Sharing our expertise

The Engage Ageing Symposium, a biennial event organised by TP School of Humanities and Social Sciences returned virtually on 12 November 2021 with the theme “Reshaping Lifelong Learning: Silver Linings from COVID-19”. It was an apt reminder of how far Singaporeans have come since the early days of COVID-19, and celebrated the adaptability of lifelong learners and their learning providers. Guest of Honour, Minister Maliki Osman, opened the event before overseas and local experts shared their views, opinions and engaged participants in illuminating discussions.

An enlightening virtual exchange

With overseas travel still curtailed, TP tapped on our networks to organise virtual trips to China, Indonesia and Thailand for over 4,200 students! Participants enjoyed a rich cultural learning experience, local country tours and other activities. These virtual trips were partially funded by the National Youth Council (NYC) under the TP-NYC three-year Asia-Ready Exposure Programme partnership agreement.
