As one wave settles, another arises. The past two years have seen a great deal of upheaval. And just when you thought it was going to get better, Omicron arrives. And now even as we speak, on the other side of the world, war has broken out.

The students graduating today are very special. They are a generation built in difficult times, who have cut their teeth on home-based learning, social distancing and all the challenges that these bring. For them, this graduation showcase is the culmination of all the hard work, sweat and tears, not just to get through their final-year project, but the last couple of years as well.

We often speak of designers as agents of change. But being agents of change also mean learning to cope with change, sometimes extraordinary change. Indeed, one cannot effect change without first being changed in visceral ways. The graduating class of 2022, I believe, has seen and experienced the vicissitudes of change and faced their challenges head-on. For that, the grit and the resilience shown, congratulations; you have indeed earned that hard-won role of designer – agents of change.
