ASC Bags Champion, 2nd Runner-up Prizes at Science Buskers Festival

The School of Applied Science, Temasek Polytechnic bagged both the Champion and 2nd Runner-up in the Tertiary/Open category at the Science Buskers Festival 2018.

 

This competition, organized by the Science Centre Singapore, was held from 31 Aug to 1 Sep at Plaza Singapura. There were 5 teams shortlisted for the finals (Tertiary/Open categories). ASC bagged 2 prizes.

 

The Champions, Biomedical Science students Shaun Ong Jing Long, Jullian Chng Jun En and Woo Keng Shawn showcased their project on the oobleck, a mixture of cornstarch and water. They demonstrated the oobleck’s outstanding shock-absorbing properties by dropping an egg into a bag filled with oobleck from a height of 1.5 metres without cracking it. The team also showcased how oobleck may be used for other purposes eg. as body armour.



2nd runner-up team consisting of Pharmaceutical Science students Tang Xiang Fei, Wong Kee Eng and Nishath Kumar S/O Siva Kumar demonstrated the properties of superabsorbent polyacrylate polymer and explained the chemical interactions between water molecules and the functional groups in the polymer. The team also showcased the potential use of the superabsorbent polymer in agriculture.
