School of Applied Science

Nurturing Tomorrow’s Scientists

Join the School of Applied Science to gear up for a rewarding career in the vibrant healthcare, food, chemical and life sciences industries.

To foster interdisciplinary learning and ensure a strong foundation, all Year 1 students take on a common curriculum which extends their learning across different technical domains of science.

Here, you will benefit from work-based learning, internships, project collaborations, as well as research work, You will also get to hone your skills working in the Learning Enterprises, which are facilities simulating real-world work environments. These include the TP Animal Clinic & Wellness, and the Bistro Lab Cafeteria.

Elective Clusters are offered in Year 3. These are for you to either select your specialisation area or get cross-trained in other disciplines, which will enhance your multi-domain exposure and learning experience. You may also participate in the Differential eXperiential Programme (DXP), which offers opportunities for you to deepen or broaden your skills across domains.

Be among future technologists and aspiring scientists who will collectively make the world a healthier, greener and better place!

Highlights

Jointly administered by Temasek Polytechnic (TP) in partnership with Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), the TP-SUTD Pathway Programme (PP) allows students enrolled in the School of Applied Science’s Diploma in Chemical Engineering to take modules taught by SUTD while studying for their diploma, and to earn credits which are recognised for degree programmes offered by SUTD.

By taking SUTD modules in your final semester at TP, alongside first-year SUTD students, you can complete your SUTD degree one year ahead of your peers!

FAQs

What is unique about the teaching pedagogy adopted at the School of Applied Science? How is it different from other polytechnics?

What is unique about the teaching pedagogy adopted at the School of Applied Science? How is it different from other polytechnics?

The success of our graduates is largely the result of the real life experiences we offer our students on campus – a unique way of training students – not only through the usual classroom and laboratory settings, but also through real life projects and learning enterprises which simulates real life work environment.

At the School of Applied Science, we adopt the “Learning Enterprise” approach. The concept of Learning Enterprises as an innovative teaching approach is developed from TP’s philosophy of ‘bringing education to life and life to education’. The Learning Enterprise offers students an insight into how science and technology lead to competitive advantages for businesses. The Learning Enterprise serves as a platform to test concepts of new products, services and businesses, and eventually for a business spin-off.

What is the academic structure for students in the School of Applied Science?

What is the academic structure for students in the School of Applied Science?

The academic architecture in the School of Applied Science aims to develop collaborative and self-directed learning skills for our students to be life-long learners through real-life and applied learning experiences.  One notable outcome of this is the smooth transition of student interns into companies as employees.

The academic architecture of the School of Applied Science emphasises:

  • Building a strong foundation core among first-year students
  • Strengthening key concepts and skills in the diploma-specific content among second year students
  • Enhancing applied learning for final-year students

Final-year students will be required to read an Elective Cluster offered by the School. The Elective Clusters to be offered by the various courses, and the subjects under these clusters, are summarised below:
