SJ GROUP AND TEMASEK POLYTECHNIC DEVELOP FUTUREBUILT LAB TO DRIVE SMART, SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS INNOVATION

Singapore, [03 Nov 2025] - SJ Group (SJ) and Temasek Polytechnic (TP) have joined forces to develop the FutureBuilt Lab (FBL), a new innovation and applied research hub that will advance sustainability, digitalisation, and talent development in Singapore’s Built Environment sector. This initiative is part of a broader Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between SJ’s Integrated Solutions business with TP, aimed at driving innovation and building a smarter, greener, and more future-ready Built Environment ecosystem.

This partnership marks a significant step in advancing smart and sustainable campus operations, bringing together industry-leading facility management (FM) practices and academic research excellence to nurture the next generation of built environment professionals. The collaboration supports TP’s ongoing transformation into a smart, sustainable, and future-ready campus.

Through this partnership, SJ and TP will:

  •  Test-bed emerging built environment technologies and innovative solutions on TP’s campus;
  • Collaborate on joint research proposals for national grant calls such as the Ministry of Education’s Translation & Innovation Fund and Ministry of National Developments’ Cities of Tomorrow;
  • Enhance TP’s Green Mark Platinum certification in its pursuit of achieving a Super Low Energy Campus; and
  • Co-develop training programmes to build future-ready talent in Smart FM and sustainability.

Establishing a FutureBuilt Lab within TP’s Integrative Built Environment Centre

Under the MOU, SJ and TP will co-develop the FutureBuilt Lab within the school’s Integrative Built Environment Centre (IBEC). The Lab will serve as a testbed and innovation platform for AI-optimised smart facilities management technologies to support TP’s goal of becoming a net-zero campus by 2050.

The FutureBuilt Lab will serve as a living lab and applied learning environment. Students and adult learners can engage in hands-on projects related to energy efficiency, smart facilities management, and green building solutions. The lab provides real-world case studies, digital facility tools, and access to industry-led problem statements, ensuring that sustainability learning is not just theoretical but deeply experiential.

The lab will also serve as a collaborative research platform for TP and SJ to co-develop solutions addressing key sustainability challenges such as decarbonisation, resilient infrastructure, and smart campus management. The resulting testbeds and prototypes will contribute to the transformation of Singapore’s Built Environment sector.

Driving real impact and talent development

As one of Singapore’s leading facilities management companies, SJ brings deep operational expertise in condition-based and outcome-based smart facilities management, underpinned by the Group’s capabilities across AI and digital twin solutions, ESG advisory, and sustainable advisory across multiple asset types in the project life cycle.

TP complements this with technical expertise in AI, IoT, robotics, behavioural sciences, and applied materials, integrating academic research with real-world application to solve pressing challenges in energy efficiency and carbon reduction. Both organisationswill co-curate pre-employment and continuing education programmes and create industry partnerships including scholarships and internships to nurture a skilled and future-ready workforce.

 “Over the years, SJ has nurtured an enduring partnership with Singapore’s education institutions managing, maintaining, and now helping to reimagine schools and campuses across the island. This collaboration with Temasek Polytechnic reflects our commitment to build smarter, greener, and more liveable learning environments, while nurturing innovators of a regenerative future,” said Alfred Fox, SJ’s Chief Executive, Integrated Solutions. “Through initiatives like the FutureBuilt Lab, we’re not only showcasing what smart facility management can achieve today. We’re shaping the capabilities and mindsets that will define tomorrow’s sustainable cities.”

“SJ and Temasek Polytechnic believe that sustainability is a collective journey grounded in innovation, learning, and support. FutureBuilt Lab will make Temasek Polytechnic a living laboratory for smart, sustainable facilities, where we try ideas, practice our values, and inspire the next generation. Through these efforts, we hope to benefit the community and share solutions and practices openly,” said Wallace Lim, Chief Sustainability Officer & Senior Director of the School of Engineering at Temasek Polytechnic.
