Module Overview

Some pills pep you up. Others calm you down. How safe are they? Get a sneak preview of the Pharmacy Technician’s world, and how you can be a future ‘carer’ who improves the physical health of others. This module introduces students to the products and services available at a typical pharmacy. It aims to educate students on medication focusing on over-the-counter medications, principles of optimising drug therapy as well as responsible and proper self-medication. You will also get the chance to hear first-hand from industry practitioner(s) or poly lecturer(s) about the pharmaceutical industry! The possible career fields upon completion of a Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science at TP where this ApLM stems from, include Pharmacy Technician in hospitals/polyclinics & retail pharmacies, Retail Executive in retail pharmacies, Sales & Marketing Executive in pharmaceutical and health & beauty industries, Regulatory Executive, QA/QC Executive, R&D Technologist or Process Technologist in pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing industries. A satisfying career in healthcare awaits you!  

 

This module will be conducted within a duration of 22.5 hours.

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

 

  1. List the products and services available in pharmacies
  2. Differentiate the roles of healthcare professionals and self in personal health care
  3. State the principles of optimising drug therapy
  4. Demonstrate examples of responsible self-medication
  5. Appraise various resources of information on OTC medication and self-medication
  6. List the common dosage forms and packaging of OTC medication
  7. Identify the types of information on OTC medication labels
  8. Describe the causes and symptoms of fever, minor aches and pain as well as OTC preparations for their relief
  9. Describe the causes and symptoms of cough and common cold as well as OTC preparations for their relief
  10.  Describe the causes and symptoms of common skin problems as well as OTC preparations for their relief
  11.  Describe the causes and symptoms of common gastrointestinal complaints as well as OTC preparations for their relief

 

Assessment Components
Students will be assessed based on the following:
 

  1. Quizzes
  2. Practical / Project

 

Completion criteria
Students are required to:

 

  • Fulfill at least 67% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
