Course Overview

This 2-day course gives participants a hands-on introduction to Basic CAD and 3D Printing. Participants will learn how to use CAD software to design basic engineering parts, and within one day, they should be able to create most simple parts confidently. They will also be introduced to other web-based CAD software.

The course covers advanced CAD skills, such as creating more complex 3D models and building assembly files. Participants will learn how to convert CAD files into print-ready formats and prepare them for 3D printing. They will also learn where and how to download 3D models from the internet and print them.

Participants will visit TP’s 3D printing labs to explore different 3D printing technologies and see advanced equipment such as 3D scanners, the latest 3D printers, and metal 3D printing systems. Selected AI design tools will also be introduced. Step-by-step training slides and guided practice will be provided throughout the course.

Entry Requirements

Able to use software at a comfortable pace.

Who Should Attend

Hobbyist, Prototyping Enthusiasts, Engineering Technicians, Operations Staff, Students

What You'll Learn

Day 1 (8 Hours)

3D Modelling using CAD/3D Software

  1. Introduction to 3D Modelling

Understand the basics of 3D printing technology and various types of 3D printers available in market.

  2. 3D Modelling using CAD Software

This is a hands-on session where participants will learn to apply different features of a model to create a CAD data file to be used to print a solid 3D object. The following are some of the main features used.

    1. Extrusion

    2. Cuts

    3. Rounds

    4. Chamfer

    5. Pattern

    6. Assembly

  3. 3D file conversion for printing.

Import and export of different reference files and visualisation in the CAD software environment. Convert files from raw CAD model format to a printable format. Optimise the model for 3D printing.

  4. Individual Project (Part 1)

Participants will design their own 3D model using CAD software and optimise the 3D model.

Day 2 (8 Hours)

3D Printing Using Open Source Data

  1. Introduction to 3D printing

Understand the basics of 3D printing technology and various types of 3D printers available in market.

  2. 3D Printer Working Mechanism.

Understand the working principles and the mechatronics (mechanical and electronics) behind a 3D printer followed by a real-life demonstration.

  3. 3D Model Conversion and Slicing using software.

Apply the CAD modelling functions to slice data files for 3D printing.

  4. Individual Project (Part 2)

Participants will prepare their own 3D model in printable format, convert the raw file to STL, slice the files before finally printing the 3D object
