Malaysian student, Yong Wen Xin, has proven that one can be active and achieve great things in co-curricular activities (CCA), and yet do well academically – by working hard and playing hard.  The 21-year-old graduate, who hails from Malaysia, believes that we should “grab every opportunity and make good use of them”.  That she certainly did, with great success.

The GCE ‘O’ level 5-pointer continued her excellent academic performance at Temasek Polytechnic (TP) when she scored an incredible 27 Distinctions and 6 A’s, chalking up a perfect cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 over her 3 years in TP.  She graduated with a Diploma in Biomedical Engineering (Merit), winning the Course Gold Medal, the IES Gold Medal Award, as well as the prestigious CapitaLand Award for All-Round-Excellence which recognises graduates who have excelled in both their studies and CCA.

Apart from working hard academically, Wen Xin was hyper active in CCAs.  She was TP Civil Defence Lionhearters Club, and eventually rose to become its President in 2017.  Under her leadership, the Club organised many activities including the Tampines Changkat Emergency Preparedness Day, the NFEC Mass Fire Evacuation Drill, as well as CPR and AEG Training Programmes.  In recognition of her contributions, Wen Xin was awarded TP’s CCA Merit Award for Leadership as well as the Engineering Student Leadership Programme Certificate of Achievement for 2017.

Her community contributions read equally impressively: She participated in projects such as the Inclusive@THK Home of the Disabled, and was project leader in an Overseas Community Project to Cambodia in 2017.  Outside of school, she gave much of her time to volunteering in community activities including the SCDF’s Mercy Relief Street Collection and Community Emergency Preparedness Programme.   “Be kind to others,” urges the humble and caring biomedical enthusiast. 

Wen Xin has secured a place in the Singapore University of Technology & Design (SUTD) where she will read Engineering Product Design on a scholarship.  She hopes to eventually pursue a career in biomedical engineering, doing research & development to help create better and more effective medical devices that will help the community. 

“I would like to thank TP for helping me to get to where I am today,” says a grateful Wen Xin. 

As they say, Malaysia boleh!  We say, TP School of Engineering lagi boleh!
