400 Innovative, Meaningful Ideas by TP Design Students on Showcase
The Design Show Media Preview - Friday, 9 March 2018, 1pm onwards
Recent government debates noted that NEA figures show that some 822,200 tonnes of plastic waste were generated in 2016, of which only 7 per cent was recycled. By 2030, the amount of plastic trash in the ocean will shockingly outnumber the fish! This Final-year Temasek Polytechnic (TP) Environment Design student project tackles this issue with a vision for Singapore in 2065, where the proposed idea Treasurable Trash will be a place where the community can make an active difference in plastic waste management – going beyond the process of collection, cleaning, sorting and shredding. This will be a space where craftsmen, appreciators of art, and like-minded people with a sense of environmental responsibility can contribute towards and grow the practice; participating in related recreational workshops aimed to educate and encourage upcycling plastic trash to art that can be treasured. These will be exhibited at public makerspaces and sold at retail markets all within the proposed site.
Battling Against Singapore’s Ungracious Behaviours
OLYMPIAK is a local, satirical and interactive Olympic-style digital game tournament that uses humour to make fun of the ungracious acts of Singaporeans such as using umbrellas and tissue packets to “chope” tables, and tossing shared bicycles into drains and canals. This Communication & Design student’s project aims to define a range of 6 localised disciplines inspired by our culture; and dissuade Singaporeans from behaving poorly in public, by channelling it into a controlled game environment.
Fashion Takes Pride in Our Roots
Inspired by local heritage and culture, Rakyat aims to instill pride and nostalgia through a brand that is truly Singaporean. Each collection designed by Apparel Design & Merchandising students will be launched during cultural festivals in Singapore and preserve local traditions that may be forgotten. For example, the Peranakan houses of Katong, its colourful food such as Chendol and Ang Ku Kueh form the core design elements in this collection.
These projects across fashion, architecture, film, product design and communication design disciplines will be showcased by the graduating class of Temasek Polytechnic (TP) School of Design. The Design Show will be on at the Temasek Polytechnic School of Design, Block 28A from 9 to 12 March 2018.
Additionally, in an effort to train young minds to be responsible designers, this year’s design show will launch the inaugural Sustainability Awards. The top three projects that address bigger issues of the world through their designs such as reducing poverty, resolving hunger and responsible consumption, will each receive a $1,000 prize. Winners will be announced at the opening of Design Show.
