Module Overview

What makes an artwork good? How does it tell an interesting story and evoke emotional responses from the viewer? This module emphasises the importance of understanding the who, what, where, when, why, and how the use art elements and design principles can create more exciting and meaningful visual compositions. We will explore various modern art/design movements and discover the factors that influenced and inspired some of the famous artists/designers in their creations. It challenges the students to exploit their artistic talents and exercise their creative freedom to solve design problems within context. The module also includes a learning journey at the gallery for an in-depth study on visual literacy. At the end of the module, the students will be familiarised with all the art elements and design principles; and more importantly the awareness of these art and design knowledge will empower them to achieve more successful art forms and appreciate design. 

 

This module will be conducted within a duration of 22.5 hours.

 

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

 

  1. Understand the importance of art elements and design principles in visual composition
  2. Understand the basic application of art elements and design principles in visual composition
  3. Understand the creative application of art elements and design principles in visual composition
  4. Experience the learning journey @ Gallery on Visual Literacy
  5. Demonstrate their learning through a portfolio presentation (oral/visual/written)

 

Assessment Components

Students will be assessed based on the following:

 

  1. Group Project 
  2. Individual Portfolio

 

Completion criteria

Students are required to:

 

  • Fulfill at least 67% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
