Module Overview

This module introduces the students to basic electronic design and construction of prototypes. Students will have the opportunity for real world application in assembling and testing electronic display boards, Physics and Engineering show and tell, electronic dice, water detectors and night light activation circuit.

The activities planned for the ApLM offer practical and authentic experiences that typical polytechnic engineering students and electronics engineers in the industry undergo. Facilitators will use the ApLM to introduce relevant polytechnic courses such as Diploma in Electronics, Diploma in Aerospace Electronics and Common Engineering Programme.

This module will be conducted within a duration of 22.5 hours.

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  1. Make use of the simple lab tools and lab equipment
  2. Patch simple breadboard circuitry
  3. Set and use the electronic equipment to make measurements
  4. Identify and test the electronic passive and active components
  5. Assemble interesting electronic display board project
  6. Assemble and test circuit boards for water detection, light activation in dark environment and electronic dice board
  7. Apply soldering and de-soldering techniques
  8. Understand and identify how Physics and Engineering concepts play a part in the functions of common electrical appliances

Assessment Components
Students will be assessed based on the following:

  1. Class Participation
  2. Assignment 1
  3. Assignment 2
  4. Project 1
  5. Project 2
  6. Lab Work

Completion Criteria
Students are required to:

  • Fulfill at least 67% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
