Course Overview

The p-n junction is one of the most important structures in semiconductor technology. It forms the basis of many electronic devices.

This course will provide participants with an understanding of p-n junctions and different types of contacts to semiconductors.

Who Should Attend

Participants who have completed Fundamentals of Semiconductor Materials course.

What You'll Learn

At the end of this course, you will be able to:


  1. Explain how a p-n junction is formed

  2. Draw the charge and electric field distribution in a p-n junction

  3. Explain the sequence of events of a p-n junction under forward bias and reverse bias

  4. Interpret the current-voltage relationship of a p-n junction

  5. Explain the depletion capacitance of a p-n junction

  6. List the characteristics of two types of metal -semiconductor contacts

  7. Draw the current voltage characteristics of a Schottky contact and an ohmic contact

  8. Explain how a metal-semiconductor contact is formed

  9. State the criteria for Schottky and ohmic contacts

  10. Explain how a practical ohmic contact is made

Quizzes – measure participants’ understanding of key concepts and application of concepts learnt for each topic









Participants will receive an electronic Certificate of Completion issued by Temasek Polytechnic upon completion of each MLC.
