Course Overview
This course is jointly offered by Rainbow Centre and Temasek Polytechnic.
In response to the evolving educational landscape, the need for specialized skills in special needs education has become increasingly vital. This comprehensive diploma course offers a deep dive into areas such as teaching and learning support, behavioural management, and psychological practices, all of which are crucial for fostering inclusive and supportive environments.
Throughout this course, learners will gain specialized knowledge and practical skills for supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in educational settings, emphasizing structured teaching and effective behavioural management. Participants learn to create inclusive environments, regulate arousal levels, manage behaviours, and understand neurocognitive theories related to ASD. It also covers family-centric planning, community integration, and collaboration with stakeholders to help individuals with ASD achieve their life goals.
Do note that work-based learning sessions will be conducted at Rainbow Centre.
All students are required to bring their own notebooks for lessons. You may refer to the required technical specifications for notebooks HERE.
Entry Requirements
Minimum Entry Requirements
A Polytechnic Diploma or ITE Technical Diploma/Technical Engineer Diploma/ Work-Learn Technical Diploma or equivalent
OR a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
OR a Post-Secondary Certificate with at least 3 Years of relevant working experience
Applicants with other equivalent academic qualifications and/or working experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
What You'll Learn
Upon completing the course, graduates should be able to:
a. Comprehend autism spectrum disorders, including their characteristics and variations.
b. Acquire effective teaching strategies for individuals with autism
c. Master behaviour management and emotional support techniques.
d. Implement inclusive education practices and engage collaboratively with families, communities, and other professionals in the Special Needs sector.
To be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Applied Autism Studies, participants are required to complete a total of 2 modular certificates (PDCs). A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of each PDC.
Modes of Assessment
The assessment will be based on a combination of coursework components, including individual written reports, case studies, and group projects.
This assessment plan is structured to ensure that learners effectively achieve relevant competencies through practicum sessions in a special education school. The integration of theory and practice in the course design allows the students to immediately apply their knowledge in the classrooms, as well as other real-world settings (e.g., case studies, practical training).
