Gold Award

This is a fuel efficiency competition in which contestants design, build, and race their own eco-friendly car on a track, to see which car uses the least fuel to complete a given 10km course.  TP's School of Engineering has won the competition (hydrogen category) 3 times consecutively, in 2018, 2019, and 2020, with their TP Eco Car that runs on a hydrogen fuel cell, called “Falcon-1000”.  This patented fuel cell is the world’s highest density fuel cell, and was designed by TP staff and students in collaboration with an industry partner.

1 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze, 1 Best Prototype award

Our Engineering students clinched a Gold, a Silver, and a Bronze award, as well as the Best Prototype Award at the Assistive & Rehabilitation Technologies Student Innovation Challenge (ARTSIC) Competition 2020.  The “Smart Glove”, designed to test the finger motor skills of a patient, won the Gold; while “A Smart Trip Down Memory Lane”, a game to test and improve the memory of dementia patients, took the Silver as well as the Best Project Prototype Award.  A third project, called the “Smart Insole”, to predict the risk of foot ulcers in diabetic patients, clinched the Bronze.

Merit award

Our Aerospace students won the Merit award in the Space Challenge 2020, a prestigious competition organised by the Singapore Space and Technology Association.  After intensive study and research, they proposed the concept of a space-craft to reduce the amount of space debris such as decommissioned satellites, defunct rockets and exploded mechanical parts that are currently floating in space.  The proposed space-craft would be able to capture and retrieve orbiting debris, which would then disintegrate as the space craft re-enters the earth’s atmosphere.

Course Medals

Course Medals (Gold, Silver, Bronze) are awarded to the top 3 students of each diploma cohort, and presented during each year’s graduation ceremony.  Bearing the name of the companies or institutions in the industry which sponsored them, these medal awards are prestigious, memorable, and a testimony to not just the hard work of the recipient, but also the high level of industry relevance provided by our diploma training programmes.

About 1,500 Engineering students received their diplomas at 5 graduation ceremonies held from 3 -- 5 May 2017 at Temasek Polytechnic’s Convention Centre.

Bad boy Ganesh s/o Kunasehkaran would often go clubbing, smoke and drink heavily, skip classes, and neglect his studies. He did so badly academically that he was expelled from his Aerospace & Avionics diploma course in his final year at his previous polytechnic.

But where Republic Polytechnic turned him away, Temasek Polytechnic (TP) gave him a second chance – which turned out to be the key stroke that unlocked Ganesh's true potential.

Resolving to turn his life around, he worked hard at TP, and his efforts paid dividends. In May 2017, the 28-year-old graduated with a Diploma in Green Building & Sustainability (Merit), and won the Lee Kuan Yew Award with a cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.97. How did Ganesh do it? He explained: “Smoking became synonymous with my old habits, and I felt that to change for the better, I needed to start by quitting smoking."A smoker since he was 13, he had tried to kick the habit on eight previous occasions, consulting doctors and using patches and gums. But they all failed – until he was in TP.

"Quitting smoking made me realise how mentally strong I can be," assessed Ganesh. “That mental fortitude certainly helped me to focus during my diploma course,” he added.

He eventually did so well at TP that when his MOE subsidy for his Poly studies ceased (as he had exceeded the 5 years of subsidised study), which means he had to pay about $20,000 per year to continue studying at TP, the Building & Construction Authority (BCA) stepped in to offer him a scholarship worth $15,000 per year for his remaining 2 years of study at TP. That gave him even more motivation to work harder.

Ganesh added: "I am really grateful to TP for giving me this second chance, and I hope to be able to give back to society and to my parents for their support."

Loo Jian Han's “good boy turned bad then turned good again” story would be an inspiration for any student. His decline first started when he was punched by the jealous boyfriend of a girl he harmlessly chatted with at the basketball court in his estate when he was in Sec 2. The hurt, anger and humiliation from that incident caused him to become rebellious and he eventually started playing truant, mixed with bad company and got involved in fights, sustaining numerous serious injuries in the process. Totally losing interest in his studies, he even slept right through his N-level Principles of Accounts exams at Yuying Sec School and got a zero for the paper. His N-level exam results opened only one door to him – to study at ITE. There, his poor attitude to studies continued, until one fine day during his second year at ITE, when he took on a part-time sales job and met his girlfriend, who was then about to start her Business diploma course in TP. Love changed his life. Feeling that he was not up to being her equal, and challenged by the deep desire to be able to provide for his girlfriend in future, Jian Han woke up to reality and resolved to change for the better. From that day, he started studying hard, and did well enough in his Higher NITEC exams to be admitted directly into the second year of the Diploma in Electronics diploma course at TP. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, as Jian Han graduates with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.95 and the prestigious Tay Eng Soon gold medal, he looks back fondly on the day love changed his life. Declaring himself as a “new man”, Jian Han looks forward to beginning his Electrical Engineering degree course at NUS, and – of course – to tie the knot with his girlfriend soon.

Faced with reading and learning difficulties since kindergarten, Anabel Ng Shu Ming had a tendency to confuse the order of letters and consequently flunked all her spelling tests. But that did not deter her. Adopting a line from a Kelly Clarkson song, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, she soldiered on, developing her own coping strategies by the time she was in Yio Chu Kang Sec School. Despite her parents’ wishes for her to follow in her elder sister’s footsteps and study an in junior college, Anabel chose to follow her passion in aviation, and enrolled for the diploma in Aviation Management & Services diploma course at TP. “I wanted to follow my passion, not follow the crowd,” she recalls. Today, she has absolutely no regrets, graduating with an impressive CGPA of 3.98, topping her cohort and winning both the course gold medal as well as the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew award. Anabel has earned a place in the Business degree programme at NTU and eventually hopes to work for an airline.

“Giving up was never an option for me,” says Tessa Ong Yu Xian, the winner of the Lee Kuan Yew award for academic excellence. This 5-pointer from Bishan Park Sec School enrolled in the Diploma in Aviation Management & Services through the Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA) exercise and has never looked back since. Drawing inspiration from her goal-getter mother, she chalked up a perfect CGPA of 4.0, winning the Course Gold medal as well. Living by her mantra, “Never fear the unknown”, Tessa is a model of how determination and courage will ensure success. She will pursue a degree in Public Policy & Global Affairs at NTU.

A former computer gaming addict who neglected his studies has made good – that’s Haley Poh Yong Yao. “I would spend 20 hours per day gaming, four hours sleeping at home, and then continue sleeping in school,” recalls the Normal Technical student at Compassvale Sec School. When he was in Sec 3, a couple of visits to the viewing gallery at Changi Airport changed him totally. He decided that he wanted to make his mark in the aviation & aerospace sphere. He worked hard, made it into ITE College (Central), and enrolled in the Common Engineering Programme at TP. His progress continued to accelerate as he moved along, streaming into the Diploma in Aerospace Electronics in his second semester. Haley graduated with a CGPA of 3.96 and the Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal.

Coming from a humble background, Estella Koh Siew Lee was determined to work hard so as to continue receiving the prestigious TP Scholarship (which provided her with $2,000 for each year of study). But this former student of CompassvaleSecSchool was not content to just focus on her studies. Juggling the heavy demands of her academic work with her CCA commitment as President of the TP Salvo Drums group, she also found time to work part time. Estella graduated with a Diploma in Aerospace Engineering (Merit) with a CGPA of 3.96, the Course Bronze medal, the CCA Arts Merit Award, the CCA Leadership Merit Award, and the All Round Excellence award.

Muhammad Faias is the first-ever Lee Kuan Yew award winner to graduate with a Private Pilot's Licence (PPL), which he obtained as part of his Aviation Management & Services (AMS) diploma course. Coping brilliantly with the academic demands of his course, the concurrent rigorous flying lessons at the Singapore Youth Flying Club, as well as the strenuous training schedule as a member of TP's Triathlon Team, Faias notched up a perfect cummulative GPA of 4.0. This former student of St Gabriel's Sec School will be pursuing a double degree in Business Admin & Accountancy at NTU.

Proving that girls can do as well as guys in the male-dominated aerospace field, Ms Ee Lee Yee chalked up a CGPA of 3.9 and clinched the All Round Excellence Award. What won this former student of Siglap Sec School the award was her all-rounded excellence outside the classroom as well: Lee Yee was Vice President of the polytechnic's Salvo Drums group, contributing as a group leader, trainer, choreographer and performing artist, and was also in charge of musical scoring and the group's peformances, herself performing at numerous national events such as the 20th World Orchid Conference and a Malaysia Super League football match. Lee Yee has been offered a place in the second year of the Electrical & Electronic Engineering degree programme at NTU.

Another top performer, Quek Kai Yu, believes that nothing is impossible if you have a goal and work hard towards it. Playful and adverse to studying in his primary school days, Kai Yu found himself in the Normal Technical stream at Dunman Sec School, and eventually made it to ITE. Inspired by his form teacher at ITE, Kai Yu decided to work hard. He made it into the Diploma in Infocomm & Network Engineering at TP, and that was where he blossomed and truly excelled, scoring a CGPA of 3.97.

About 1,500 Engineering students received their diplomas at 4 graduation ceremonies held on 22 & 23 May 2013 at Temasek Polytechnic’s Convention Centre.

A former victim of school bullying has had the last laugh. Jeremy Jee De Sheng, who was bullied during his lower secondary school years and who struggled academically through Sec 3 & 4, now tops his cohort at Temasek Polytechnic with a remarkable perfect CGPA of 4.0, scoring 27 Distinctions and 3 A’s during his 3 years in TP. Jeremy’s outstanding achievement earned him the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Award as well as the Diploma in Info-communications Course Gold Medal.

A former student of Temasek Sec School, Jeremy has demonstrated that being an underdog is not a barrier to success; in fact, it is when the going gets tough that the tough gets going.

Another top performer was national badminton player, Thng Boon Seong. The former student of Ngee Ann Sec School, who took a 2-year break to train full time with the national badminton team after his ‘O’ levels, eventually realised that “in order to survive in Singapore, a good education is a must”. And he got more than just a good education at TP. Boon Seong graduated with a Diploma in Electronics, chalking up a GPA of 3.83 with 19 A’s and 2 Distinctions during his 3-years at TP, despite his hectic schedule as the TP badminton team Captain. He also won the Lee Kong Chian Award for All-Round Excellence, the Sports Person of the Year award in 2012, and the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship.

Jeremy will read for a double degree in Business Administration & Computing at NUS (2015--2018) on a Public Service Commission (PSC) Singapore Government Scholarship (Open).

"It doesn't matter how long you take to reach your target, so long as you reach it".
Most Singaporeans, who are in such a hurry to succeed in life that they end up faltering instead, could do well to take the cue from Christina Lee, who took her time and wasn't very motivated in her studies. When she finally decided to work hard, she excelled.

The former Unity Sec School student, who scored an aggregate of 28 in her "O" levels, graduated with a Diploma in Computer Engineering and received the Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal awarded each year to the top student who was from the Institute of Technical Education.

Another top student was Dominic Koh, who had initially failed get a place in NYJC. He then decided to join Temsek Poly, which helped him to realise his full potential. Dominic eventually graduated with a Diploma in Biomedical Informatics & Engineering (Merit) and won the Lee Kuan Yew award with a perfect GPA score of 4.0.

If you fail, try again; you may do better than if you hadn't failed. A living example of that philosophy is Lum Shi En, who graduated with a GPA of 3.97 and snactched the Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal awarded each year to the top student who was from the Institute of Technical Education.

Shi En had failed in his first attempt (if you can call that "failure" at all) and was removed from Temasek Polytechnic in 2002. He returned in 2008, starting from scratch, and even stronger in mind and spirit. This time, he not only graduated with a Diploma in Mechatronics, but made it to the top.

Another top student was the All Round Excellence award winner, Eugene Luo. Showing how active involvement in sports should not affect one's studies, Eugene scored a GPA of 3.73 -- all the while actively training with the national Under-21 squad, and captaining the Temasek Poly soccer team to some memorable victories.
