With the first main committee election since 2014 for Temasek Polytechnic’s Students Union (TPSU) coming to a conclusion, the question that comes to mind is – how does the committee move forward from here?

After four years of running uncontested, this year’s election brought a sea of new faces into the fold, eager to make a difference in the school.

“Every new year brings about its new challenges for the new committee, but each new committee is filled with determined and passionate young leaders that are constantly working on a new approach to better serve the Temasek Polytechnic population,” said Jordan Choo, 19, a Year 2 student from the Diploma in Aviation Management & Services, School of Engineering, and the newly elected President of TPSU.

He added: “The long term plan which the main committee has been working on is building an inclusive and vibrant environment for all students. Our goal has always been to keep the TP spirit alive through our various events.”

One such example of a newly organised event would be the Temasek Polytechnic Family Day Carnival announced at the TPSU Annual General Meeting 2018 which was held on July 13th. Students and lecturers alike are invited to bring their families for a day of fun games and food in TP. More details of the event will be announced at a later date.

Jordan, along with the other candidates, had their faces put up on posters and banners in every school during the election period. Now that all the attention is on them, the ability to maintain a good image is crucial.

“As a leader, it is important to always be aware of the way we carry ourselves in our speech, actions and behaviour – in public and even in front of our friends. We represent the students of TP and hence we have to uphold the best values and traits of a TP student.” explained Jolynn Tng, 18, a Year 2 student from the Diploma in Communications and Media Management, School of Business, and the new Social Secretary in the main committee.

“For example, a good habit we are trying to cultivate is to keep track of the language we use, even in our personal lives. We have to be accountable for the things we say.”

With that being said, the newly elected main committee has high hopes for this academic year. “Our main focus this year is to develop our events – old and new – such that we are able to reach out to as many TP students as possible. We want to be the bridge between students of all schools,” Jordan expresses.

“We hope that this year through new initiatives and events, we can reach a milestone in our vision for a more inclusive and bonded TP.”

“If you want to keep up-to-date on the events we have in-store for you, head on over to our instagram handle @tpsuonline!” Jolynn adds with a chuckle.

“It’s going to be a great year.”
