Temasek Polytechnic Honours Outstanding Student Leaders and CCA Leaders Who Rise Above Challenging Personal Circumstances to Excel in CCA And Sports

EMBARGOED TILL 24 JANUARY 2023 5PM

TEMASEK POLYTECHNIC HONOURS OUTSTANDING STUDENT LEADERS AND CCA LEADERS WHO RISE ABOVE CHALLENGING PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES TO EXCEL IN CCA AND SPORTS

Singapore, 24 June 2023A student who fought Stage 4 Lymphoma and continued to contribute greatly to his CCA community; another who juggled between school, CCA and caring for his ailing grandmother and paraplegic sister; yet another who enthusiastically flies the sustainability flag. And of course, seven SEA Games medalists who led Singapore to triumph at the South-East Asian Games. These are some of the students who will be accorded Temasek Polytechnic’s (TP) highest student honours at the Temasek Student Excellence Awards 2023.

2             It is never easy to juggle CCAs with the academic demands of school – and for some, family commitments and personal health challenges. Take Muhammad Nurhan Bin Amit, who despite the ravages of Stage 4 Lymphoma and all the complications of treatment, still found time and energy to serve the school community. Or Muhammad Danial B Muhammad K, who straddled the care for his dying grandmother and paraplegic sister and his role as the President of LEAD Ambassadors. SEA Games Bronze medalist in Taekwondo Isabel Felipa Rivas knows all about the stress of training sessions versus school and the support and care for her siblings in her single-parent family.

3             For these students and the more than 1800 students that TP will honour at the Temasek Student Excellence Awards (TSEA) 2023, CCA is not just about chalking up points or showing up to an event – it is a commitment they chose to honour, and an opportunity to give back to TP and to the larger community.

4             Among these are 399 students who have demonstrated a high level of resilience with outstanding contribution to their sport or craft. Seven national athletes will also receive the Outstanding Sports Achievement Award for bringing honour to Singapore through their achievements at the 31st and 32nd Southeast Asian Games. In addition, 922 CCA Merit Awards (Arts/Sports/ Leadership), 348 Full Colours Awards and 130 Half Colours Awards will be accorded. On top of these awards, 2 officially-appointed TP coaches will receive the Outstanding Coach Award for their contributions. Selected stories of resilience and outstanding contribution are attached in Annex A of attached media release

5             TP believes in the holistic development of its students through a good balance of CCA and academic work.   In nurturing students to become tomorrow’s lifelong learners, future-oriented creators and values-centred leaders, TP strongly encourages its students to participate in CCAs and to give back to the TP community and Singapore in various ways. Students are encouraged to pick from more than 100 CCAs, sports and interest groups.

6             TP’s Principal & CEO Mr Peter Lam said: “Whatever one’s strength, passion or talent, TP supports each and every student in becoming better versions of themselves through active CCA participation. While academic success is important, we believe there is also much to learn beyond the classrooms and active CCA participation and leadership will bring highly valuable life experiences that will shape character and ready one for the future. However, it is never easy juggling a full academic calendar with CCA commitments. At the TSEA, we salute and acknowledge those who have done so, often going over and beyond the ordinary.”
