Course Overview

This subject provides an overview of the concepts of process improvement. It will establish the fundamental to quality concepts. Students will know how to analyse statistical control results, identify variations in processes and apply improvement techniques. Practical sessions using software applications will be integrated to enhance student learning.

The aims of this subject are to:

  1. Provide students with an understanding of quality fundamentals to enable them to measure process performance;
  2. Equip students with quality tools that could be used to monitor and control processes;
  3. Introduce students to concepts on evaluating process capability and tools to improve process performance.

Entry Requirements

Applicants applying for modular units which are drawn from existing full diploma or post-diploma programmes will have the same minimum entry requirements as the full qualifications.

What You'll Learn

  1. Describe the basic quality concepts and tools
  2. Distinguish the types of data and probability distributions
  3. Interpret results from variable and attribute charts.
  4. Analyse process capability, Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R) and Measurement system analysis (MSA).
  5. Describe the procedures for the Design of Experiments (DOE).
  6. Interpret the results of full factorial experiments and fractional factorial experiments.
  7. Infer results from Chi-Square applications.

Modes of Assessment

  • Continual Assessment 100 %

Certification

Upon successful completion of the modular unit, students will be awarded a Statement of Result which can count towards the attainment of the Diploma in Engineering (Operations & Systems Management).
