Course Overview

The aims of this subject are to equip students with:

  • A systemic view of understanding the increasingly global and complex nature of engineering and management problems.
  • Knowledge and skills to use the systems thinking approach to analyse engineering and management issues and problems, and develop high-leverage interventions.
  • The ability to differentiate between systems thinking and reductionistic thinking when engaged in problem-solving.

This subject provides a foundation for resolving and thinking about complex engineering and organisational issues with a systems perspective. Systems thinking techniques such as causal loop modeling, systems archetypes, and dynamic modeling will be introduced. These techniques form the over-arching systems thinking and modeling approach which will also be covered.

Entry Requirements

Applicants applying for modular units which are drawn from existing full diploma or post-diploma programmes will have the same minimum entry requirements as the full qualifications.

What You'll Learn

  1. Explain the core concepts of systems thinking and engineering
  2. Explain the application of systems thinking in real-life organisations
  3. Describe the use of systems methodology in complex problem solving
  4. Demonstrate the use of causal loop modeling for analysing complex problems
  5. Apply the use of systems archetypes to represent a wide range of situations
  6. Apply the use of system dynamic models to investigate dynamic issues of concern in engineering and management

Modes of Assessment

  • Continual Assessment 100 %

Certification

Upon successful completion of the modular unit, students will be awarded a Statement of Result which can count towards the attainment of the Diploma in Engineering (Operations & Systems Management).
