Course Overview

Security and safety are valued in every employee across all organisations and workplaces. This unique diploma combines knowledge and skills in both Security and Workplace Safety & Health to give you a dual advantage if you are working in or aspiring to work in either field.

 

  • Identify and manage workplace security, safety and health hazards.
  • Assess workplace security, safety and health risks. Recommend workplace security, safety and health control measures.
  • Establish and review an emergency preparedness and response plan.
  • Establish and manage WSH incident investigation and analysis process.
  • Develop a WSH management system.
  • Analyse the financial aspect of WSH.
  • Advise on WSH legal compliance issues.
  • Develop a WSH culture.
  • Design and implement a behavioural safety programme.
  • Establish measurement and monitoring of WSH performance.
  • Manage internal WSH management system audits.

‘O’ Levels

At least 3 ‘O’ Level passes

and 1 year of relevant working experience OR

Higher Nitec

GPA ≥ 2.0 OR

GPA ≥ 1.5 and 1 year of relevant working experience OR

Nitec

GPA ≥ 3.5 OR

GPA ≥ 3.0 and 1 year of relevant working experience OR

Higher Nitec in Technology/Services GPA ≥ 2.0 and 1 year of relevant working experience OR
Nitec in Technology/Services GPA ≥ 3.5 and 1 year of relevant working experience OR
WSQ Qualification Relevant WSQ Qualification with 1 year of relevant working experience and WSQ Workplace Literacy Statement of Attainment (SOA)(Level 6) AND Workplace Numeracy Statement of Attainment (SOA)(Level 6)
Without relevant academic qualifications At least 2 years of relevant working experience

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted may have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.

What You'll Learn

To be awarded the Diploma, participants are required to complete a total of 5 modular certificates (MCs). A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of each MC.

BCBS001 Principles of Management

This subject covers the key management functions of planning, organising, leading and controlling. It addresses the impact of environmental factors that affect business and the relevance of corporate social responsibility in an organisation. It emphasises the roles, responsibilities and challenges faced by supervisors/managers in an organisation.

BCBT001 Essential Computing Applications

To equip working adults to be competent in using office automating tools to function and contribute effectively in an increasingly technologically driven workplace. Emphasis is placed on giving participants hands-on training exposure to beef up their competencies in integrating and applying several useful features of commonly used applications software packages for word processing and spread sheets in their work place. The trainings will be reinforced through individual assessments and projects with presentations. The overall aim is to foster creativity in participants in leveraging on the use of computer tools to effectively improve the quality of work and increase efficiency.

BCCM001 Reports & Oral Presentation

This subject will give learners an overview of crafting reports and making oral presentations, skills which are essential in the working world. Students will be taught to select information for case notes, plan and organise it for short reports and cases. Students also will learn how to plan and deliver oral presentations, use visuals, anticipate questions and respond to questions fielded by audiences. To achieve the intended outcomes, students will craft a report given case notes. Another outcome is to enable students to make effective presentations.

BCLM016 Security Risk Management

Covers the risk management function, aspects of risk identification, analysis and prioritization, risk management planning, risk reduction and risk monitoring.

BCLM020 Electronic Security

Provides participants with knowledge of the basic principles of electronic protection and the application of various electronic security equipment. The module will cover an assessment of various electronic security devices such as operating principles, cost effectiveness, advantages and limitations.

BCLM021 Physical Security

This subject aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge and skills to be able to advise on the range, selection, application and limitations of physical security means and measures for residential, commercial and high-risk installations and developments.

BCCM002 Business Communication & Meeting Skills

This subject will help students learn the communication skills that are vital for their success at the work place. Students will be taught appropriate skills to conduct themselves effectively in a working environment. Students will be taught to write appropriate emails, memos and letters for inter-office and intra-office communication. Students also will learn the skills of conducting themselves professionally. Additionally, students will be taught different types of business documents such as agenda, notice of meeting and minutes of meeting. Through the above learning experiences, students will develop effective professional communication skills that are essential in their working lives.

BCLM034 Security Management

Covers various aspects of security management including the responsibilities of a security manager, the security organisation and security management systems.

BCLM023 Security Planning & Design

Covers the various aspects of the security planning cycle from risk management and crime prevention to information planning.

AWH0401 Workplace Safety & Health Risk Management

This subject covers the concept of formulating risk management plan in accordance to legal and other requirements. Specifically, the subject covers procedures of performing risk assessment (a component of risk management) such as identifying workplace safety and health (WSH) hazards associated with the work processes, assessing/evaluating risk level of each identified hazard and introducing effective control measures (according to Hierarchy of Control) to reduce the risk level of the hazards deemed to have unacceptable risk level.  Different types of risk assessment tools such as Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Hazard Operability (HAZOP) study, etc. are taught.

AWH0402 Workplace Safety & Health Management System

This subject covers the concept of continual improvement espoused by the classical Plan → Do → Check → Act cycle.  Interaction between elements of commonly used standards ISO45001 (and its local predecessor, S506) such as WSH policy, compliance obligations, etc. are demonstrated to show how an effective WSH management system can be achieved.

AWH0403 Effective Workplace Safety & Health Culture

This subject stresses the adaptation of models such as WSH CultureSAFE Cycle model in aiding organizations improve their WSH culture.  The 5-steps cyclical approach of WSH CultureSAFE model are elaborated in details. Pro-active safety programme such as Behaviour Based Safety programme, where a combination of peer feedback and intervention strategies are used to eliminate at-risk behaviours, are also taught.

AWH0501 Managing Workplace Safety & Health Incident and Emergency Preparedness

This subject covers the essence of an effective emergency preparedness such as methods to identify potential emergencies, planning actions to prevent/mitigate undesirable associated with the emergency, periodically testing and reviewing/revising the emergency preparedness with the ultimate goal of responding effectively to actual emergencies.  This subject also covers measures to be taken after the occurrence of an emergency such as workplace incident investigation.  Important procedures for conducting accident investigation such as fact-finding, analysis of causes (immediate or basic causes), proposal as well as implementation of effective corrective measures are taught.

AWH0502 Workplace Safety & Health Performance

This subject covers the method to establish and conduct (through a WSH internal audit) WSH performance parameters in accordance to prevailing workplace legislation.  Students will learn to use audit tools such as ConSASS checklist, questionnaire and fill-up scorecard.  Subsequently, students will learn to classify the audit findings to identify strengths and areas for improvement in an organisation’s WSH management system.

AWH0503 Financial Aspect of WSH

This subject covers the use of effective communication strategies to influence organisation’s culture and motivate employees to commit to the organization’s vision, mission and core values.  This can be achieved through presenting WSH findings in a written report that is concise and coherent as well as through delivering a positive and clear WSH presentation.

Modes of Assessment

 

Assessments will be based on a combination of coursework components such as written and practical tests, case studies, assignments and projects.
