Course Overview

If you own an interior design firm or aspire to run your own interior design practice, this course is for you.

 

With a unique blend of business management and design, this course provides you with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to manage interior design projects and run your own interior design consultancy. Learn to market your interior design business and manage your clients while staying at the forefront of new design trends. You will also be equipped with fundamental knowledge of interior design business trends and how to develop appropriate service environments.

 

Graduates can look forward to career opportunities in the interior and exhibition industries that include roles such as designers, design managers, interior design project managers, design researchers, service/experience designers and strategy/business designers.

Entry Requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements

 

A Polytechnic Diploma or ITE Technical Diploma / Technical Engineer Diploma / Work-Learn Technical Diploma in Spatial Design-related discipline or equivalent

 

OR A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent

 

OR A Post-Secondary Certificate with at least 3 Years of relevant working experience

Who Should Attend

This program is suitable for interior design entrepreneur or interior designer aspiring to take on senior role in the company. The course will deepen their skills in the areas of project management, business management, design communication and innovation to advance their career in the interior design sector.

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion, graduates should be able to:

  • manage interior design projects and work processes;
  • have the know-how to become interior design entrepreneurs;
  • appreciate the benefits of Service Design and understand psychology in design; and develop skills in strategic and operational management in an interior design practice.

 

The proposed course comprises two Post-Diploma Certificates in specific domain areas with a total duration of 240 hours or 16 credit units (CUs).  The course structure is as follows:

DCE049A Project Management

This subject provides the students with the fundamental knowledge needed in the project management of interior design projects. Students will be introduced to the relevant work processes required in the various phases in the practice of interior design. 

 

They will be given the means to clearly understand proper procedures prevalent in the office or site environment. The subject will include exposing them to the different roles and responsibilities of various stakeholder within the project team. The students will be further equipped with knowledge and skills to contribute towards efficient and successful design and project management.

DCE050A Interior Design Entrepreneurship

This subject provides the students with the fundamental knowledge of business of interior design entrepreneurs needed in the setting up of an interior design practice. The students will be introduced to the relevant office management strategies in the practice of interior design.

They will be made aware of prevalent contractual agreements and contractual obligations, which will be part and parcel of their responsibilities in the course of running an interior design practice. Students will be further equipped with the knowledge and skills to contribute towards efficient and successful office management.

DCE051A Design Communication & Strategies

This subject provides the students with the fundamental knowledge needed for the branding, marketing and communication of an interior design practice. The students will be introduced to various strategies for the promotion of an interior design practice.

They will be exposed to communication strategies that can help establish and brand the company’s corporate identity. The students will be further equipped with knowledge to successfully communicate design concepts and market design concepts, by leveraging on the interior design practice’s design mantra.

DCE052A Service Environment

This subject provides students with the fundamental knowledge needed in the developing of appropriate service environments that can be provided by an interior design practice. The students will be introduced to various strategies in service design, by means of understanding user psychology.

They will be exposed to service design methodologies in the context of interior design. The students will be further equipped with knowledge and skills to understand how a service design orientated mind set can benefit the business of an interior design practice.

DCE053A Business Management & Ethics

This subject provides students with the fundamental knowledge needed in the ethical and strategic business management of an interior design practice. The students will be introduced to strategies in the management of the various components in an interior design business.

They will be made aware of the importance of business management in areas with regards to ethics, finance, people and leadership. To further inspire students in areas pertaining to the business of interior design management, they will be exposed to industry best practices by means of engagement with interior design industry practitioners.

It is preferred that students complete the subject in “Interior Design Entrepreneurship” before attempting this subject.

DCE054A Innovation & Technology

This subject provides the students with the fundamental knowledge needed for the understanding of interior design business trends and innovation to transform the dynamics of design business. The students will be introduced to current trending business models and industry transformations within the context of the interior design industry.

They will be made aware of the interior design industry transformations in Singapore. Students will also be exposed laterally to adjacent design industry trends, so as to gain insights into possible pivotal opportunities to enhance value creation by an interior design business.

Modes of Assessment

 

The assessment would be based on a combination of coursework components such as written assignments, quizzes, projects and presentations.
