Course Overview

The Pet Care Assistant (PCA) works with the veterinary medical team to provide and prepare for the best medical care of pets. The Pet Care Assistant (Level 1) course is designed to provide participants with a foundation in essential knowledge and practical skills required for effectively caring for common pets. In this course, participants will learn the basics of animal care, husbandry, and behaviour, and will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide basic animal restraint and prepare essential surgical and medical supplies. Through a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on activities, participants will gain the confidence and competence needed to provide quality care for pets in clinical settings.

Entry Requirements

Pre-requisites: Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 5 for Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing; OR Pass in ‘N’ level English.

What You'll Learn

Participants of this course will be equipped to be competent Pet Care Assistants (Level 1) with the knowledge and skills to:

Provide basic husbandry and care to patients
Interpret basic animal behaviour
Set up and maintain common veterinary medical and surgical equipment
Communicate effectively with team members and clients

Lecturer/Trainer Profile

Ms Quah Xin Jie

After graduating with a Diploma in Veterinary Technology from Temasek Polytechnic (TP), Xin Jie pursued a Bachelor of Applied Science, extended Major in Veterinary Technology at the University of Queensland, Australia. Following about 7 years as a Veterinary Technician in local private clinics, she found particular joy in surgical procedures and diverse hospital cases. Her motivation lies in caring for patients through treatments and witnessing their recovery. Joining TP as a lecturer in the Diploma in Veterinary Technology in 2021, Xin Jie continues to practice as a Veterinary Technician at TP Animal Clinic and Wellness. In addition to her academic role, she coaches and guides students during clinic rotations, collaborates with industry partners, and maximizes learning opportunities for students.

Ms Keong Pei En

With a rich background in biomedical science and veterinary nursing, Pei En has been an experienced veterinary nurse since embarking on her career in 2009. Specializing in ultrasonography for over a decade, she is recognized as an expert in the field. Pei En's dedication to continuous professional development is evident in her proactive pursuit of knowledge, including specialized training in ultrasound imaging from the USA. Since 2021, Pei En has been an adjunct at Temasek Polytechnic (TP), contributing to adult learners' education by sharing her practical experience and knowledge in veterinary nursing. This underscores her commitment to both personal growth and the development of the next generation of professionals in the field.
