Course Overview

This is a 2-week course that covers the basic knowledge and skills needed to work in a molecular diagnostic laboratory for virus detection. It will be taught via blended learning and hands-on practical sessions. The participants will be attached in a molecular diagnostic laboratory for 5 days. This course does not provide any allowance during the course or the training attachment. There is also no job placement. The training attachment offers a real-life work experience at the host laboratory where trainees will follow the work schedule of the laboratory staff.

Entry Requirements

Science and Tech diploma qualification or an equivalent in relevant working experience (min 1 year)
Non- Science and Tech diploma holders with O level science training will also be considered on a case-to-case basis

What You'll Learn

This course aims to provide the participants with the following basic knowledge and skills:

a) General laboratory safety, biosafety requirements and knowledge on PPE
b) Fundamental techniques in aliquoting lab specimens including pipetting, dilution calculations and precautions
c) Basic principle behind molecular testing of viruses
d) RNA extraction technique
e) Operations of Real-Time PCR, interpretation of results and error identification

Certification

Participants who meet at least 75% attendance requirement, passed the assessment and complete the attachment will be awarded the Certificate of Accomplishment.

Lecturer/Trainer Profile

Dr Amaladoss Anburaj

Dr Amaladoss Anburaj joined School of Applied Science, Temasek Polytechnic (TP) as a Research Scientist in 2012 and is currently a lecturer in the Diploma in Medical Biotechnology. He teaches Molecular Biology, Molecular Diagnostics and Synthetic Biology modules.

His research focusses on development of low cost onsite diagnostic kits for aquaculture, veterinary and human disease detection. Prior to joining TP, he taught biochemistry and biotechnology at masters’ level at various institutions in India before doing his postdoctoral research at Nanyang Technological University in 2004. He had then continued his research on malaria at New Jersey Medical School, New Jersey, USA and Singapore MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART). Raj also served as Visiting Scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) between 2008 and 2012.

Ms Goh Siok Kun

Ms Goh Siok Kun is currently a Lecturer and a Safety officer of Temasek Polytechnic. She is also the Biosafety Officer in School of Applied Science for more than 8 years. Siok Kun has more than 10 years of scientific research experience and 10 years of teaching experience. Siok Kun has been involved in teaching subjects such as Microbiology, Biosafety, Immunology, Chemical and Biological Safety and Upstream Bioprocessing Technology.
