Building a New Career Path Through Determination and Lifelong Learning

After discovering a passion for working with people through an HR role, Lim Si Yi decided to deepen her expertise by enrolling in the Diploma in Business Practice (Human Resource Management & Psychology) at Temasek Polytechnic, with the goal of building a successful career in Human Resources.

Prior to entering HR, Si Yi spent more than a decade building her career in the F&B and retail sectors. While she had gained valuable workplace experience, she recognised the need for formal HR knowledge to perform more confidently and effectively in her role. Pursuing her diploma while working full-time required commitment and perseverance, particularly as she navigated personal challenges during her studies.

Through the programme, she developed a strong foundation in human resource management and psychology, enabling her to better understand workplace dynamics and apply her learning at work. The experience also strengthened her resilience, confidence and determination to continue growing professionally. Her efforts were rewarded when she was promoted to HR Executive while still pursuing her diploma.

Her journey shows that a career change does not have to mean starting from scratch. With the right experience, skills and willingness to learn, it is possible to take your career in a new direction.
