Electronic Vehicles in Singapore: Car workshops finding it hard to pivot as Singapore transitions to electric vehicles
Electronic Vehicles in Singapore
The news segment discussed how Singapore aims to work towards having its car populations running on cleaner energy by 2030, and the significance of a competent workforce equipped with the specific skillset required to service and maintain Electronic Vehicles (EV).
Featured in the interview was Mr Edward Tan, Executive Director of Hong Seh Workshop and Mr Joey Lim, President of the Singapore Motor Workshop Association (SMWA). SMWA is one of Temasek Polytechnic’s (TP) industry partners for its EV courses and works closely with the school to develop a more targeted training.
Alongside these individuals was Dr Kwan Kian Hoong, Director of Temasek SkillsFuture Academy at Temasek Polytechnic (TP) who shared that approximately only 10% of the existing professional pool of mechanics in the market have experience in servicing EVs. He cited that one of the challenges includes providing the right training and support in this domain and emphasised that workers will need to ensure that that they are kept up to date on the latest trends and technology to maintain an edge and to sustain employment in this field.
Following the launch of its first EV course last November, TP was spotlighted to have opened its third and newest EV course this month, with an in-take of over 100 adult learners across its courses.
