Students are trained to handle these emerging technologies, thereby aligning them with the needs of the industry upon graduation.
 
The School’s high level of technical competency is evident in the projects developed by these Centres.  Here are some of them:
Autonomous Mobile Robot

Step aside, human beings.  This autonomous mobile robot can deliver food and run errands, possibly more quickly and accurately than humans can!  Equipped with artificial intelligence, the robot which has a payload of 250kg, can avoid obstacles, use the lift, and even open fire safety doors.  It has been deployed at NTUC Nursing Home in Chai Chee since 2023, helping to deliver food and laundry to patients.

The next time that you are stopped by an LTA traffic officer along the road, you may just see a mini tank-like robot wheeling itself under your car.  Called the “Vehicle Under-Carriage Inspection Robot”, this remotely-controlled device is armed with an articulated camera and lighting system for the inspection of a vehicle’s under-carriage, to detect illegal vehicle modifications or hidden drugs.  This project, commissioned by LTA in 2021, is expected to be implemented from 2024.

CCM for PEM Fuel Cell

A unique process to manufacture catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs) used in PEM fuel cells was developed using ground-breaking technology that incorporates a 3-dimensional structure into the catalyst layer of the CCM.  A proprietary ink was also invented to complement the coating method.  This twin invention lowers the cost of producing CCMs.

Having developed the world’s highest density fuel cell (named “Falcon-1000”), TP staff and students designed and built a fuel cell car that combined speed and fuel efficiency.  The car was raced in the Shell Asia-Pacific cum Middle East Regional Eco Marathon Championship held in Indonesia in July 2023 – clinching top spot, and establishing Temasek Polytechnic as the king of fuel cell technology in the Asia Pacific and Middle East region.

This CAAS-approved fuel cell-powered drone for long endurance operations can fly for 2 hours with a payload of 3 kg on a single charge.  It uses lightweight carbon-fibre and a powerful waterproof propulsion system, and has the ability to integrate with various flight controllers and smart sensors.

     

Plasmonic Biosensor-Based Point-of-Care System

This point-of-care (POC) system for rapid diagnosis of sepsis, a condition caused by bacterial infection, uses a novel gold nanopillar-enhanced immunoassay to detect bacteria in human serum by measuring the procalcitonin (PCT) levels.  Tests show that this system can achieve equal sensitivity to conventional laboratory test methods, but is much faster.
