b'Exploring Social Isolation, Stress, and Needs of Caregivers to Individuals with Intellectual DisabilityFindingsOur study uncovered several factors that contributed to caregiver stress and social isolation duringCOVID-19, such as increased restlessness among caregivers children, worries surrounding theirfinancial future, having an increased workload, and caregivers level of engagement with theirchild. Older caregivers were found to have lower levels of stress, but loneliness remained the sameacross all age groups. Caregivers were generally aware of services from MINDS and cited financialsupport, MINDS centres, and check-ins as primary support services.Interview FindingsGeneral Caregiving ExperienceSome caregivers reported difficulties balancing between working from home and managing theirchild, and the struggles from the extra workload may have contributed to a more negativecaregiving experience during the circuit breaker, such as feeling more socially isolated and a higherperceived caregiver burden. They were also financially affected in some way due to caregiving, especially during the circuit breaker, resulting in increased worry for their financial futures.Caregiving BurdenCaregivers were physically and emotionally worn out from their duties, due to their daily routines, existing physical problems, and increased tantrums from their children during circuit breaker. There were also breakdowns in the communication sometimes as their children could not copewell with routine changes and it was difficult for the caregivers to understand what they wanted.Social IsolationMost caregivers did not feel socially isolated from others due to caregiving and are generallystill able to interact with others on a regular basis. However, caregivers were split evenly onfeeling left out of society. Past discriminatory incidents impacted some caregivers perceptionof social inclusion and how they interact with others. On the other hand, caregivers who didnot feel left out of society cite receiving adequate support from those around them and/orMINDS as the reason why.7TH PSYCHOLOGY STUDIES 12STUDENT CONFERENCE 2021'
