Course Overview

This subject provides a comprehensive review of theoretical concepts underpinning inductively coupled plasma (ICP) technology. The content includes components and functions of ICP-spectrometry and ICP-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) instruments, analytical methodologies using ICP techniques, sample introduction methods, and optimization of parameters for ICP based analyses.

Objectives

The aims of this subject are to equip students with the basic knowledge and skills to:

  • explain basic principles of atomic and mass spectrometry
  • operate and maintain ICP-spectrometric instruments
  • perform chemical analyses using ICP technology

Entry Requirements

Applicants applying for modular units which are drawn from existing full diploma or post-diploma programmes will have the same minimum entry requirements as the full qualifications.

To find out the minimum entry requirements specific to this modular course, please click here.

What You'll Learn

1. Principles of atomic spectrometry and mass spectrometry

2. Components of ICP spectrometric instruments

3. Components of ICP-MS instruments

4. Quantitative analyses using ICP

5. Sample introduction for ICP

6. Optimization techniques for ICP

Modes of Assessment

●      Assignments (Theory/Project/Practical) – assess student’s understanding of key concepts covered in lectures, their ability to solve the application questions and their ability to apply concepts to questions on in various topics.

●      Tests/Quizzes – measure students’ understanding of key concepts and application of concepts learnt for each topic.

●      Class participation – assess student’s attitudes towards learning in terms of active participation in discussions.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the modular unit, students will be awarded a Statement of Result which can count towards the attainment of the Specialist Diploma in Laboratory Management and Instrumentation.
