Course Overview

In today’s data-intensive economies, vast amounts of personal data are collected, used and processed. Organisations in Singapore are required to comply with the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) when they collect, use and disclose personal data.

This course will equip participants with an overview and understanding of the key legal and regulatory requirements of the PDPA and help them support their organisation’s compliance with the PDPA.

This course is suitable for Data Protection Officers (DPOs), compliance managers, human resource, IT, admin, sales and business development executives/managers who need to be involved in data protection matters.

Entry Requirements

Participants are assumed to be able to:

Understand relevant organisational strategies, objectives, culture, policies, processes and products / services;
Have information gathering skills to gather and collate necessary data;
Have analytical skills to assess policies and procedures;
Have business writing skills to prepare management report;
Have interpersonal and communication skills to interact with relevant stakeholders;
Have facilitation skills to ask the right questions to elicit necessary information; and
Be aware of compliance requirements of organisation.

Data Protection Officers, compliance managers, human resource managers, admin managers, IT, sales and other managers who are involved in data protection matters.

What You'll Learn

The course will train participants to identify key legislative and regulatory requirements under the PDPA including the 11 key obligations under the PDPA, the provisions relating to “Do Not Call”. The role of the Data Protection Officer will also be discussed, as well as learning how to manage data breaches through a case study.

The 3-day course, which has been enhanced with an expanded curriculum and more rigorous assessments, will cover the following areas:

Introduction to the PDPA
Role of DPO
Develop a process for dispute resolution
Managing data breaches
Data Protection and Do Not Call Provisions
Create an organisation’s data inventory map (DIM) and identify possible areas of non-compliance
Training and communications to staff for compliance to data protection provisions

Certification

Participants who attained at least 75% attendance and successfully completed the required assessments will be awarded a Business Management (BM) WSQ Statement of Attainment (SOA) “ICT-CGP-3020-1.1” from SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG).

Yang Yen Thaw

Yang Yen Thaw is a corporate lawyer, registered management consultant (RMC), an AAE (Associate Adult Educator), ACLP+ACTA certified adult trainer, certified AI consultant, CIPM, and PC:DP(S) certified practitioner (data protection). He has held senior management and executive positions in management and law in listed as well as private limited companies with businesses spanning Australia, China, France, India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, UK, USA, and most Southeast Asian countries. He has also run his own law firm for 12 years.

Yen Thaw serves as Chief Legal Officer, Resident Management Consultant, and Chief PDPA consultant to various Singapore companies / firms and trains DPOs as well. He presented Singapore SkillsFuture Framework in the Retail Sector to DTI, PTTC, trade associations and companies in the Philippines in November 2019.

He was the speaker for a webinar on “PDPA and Data Governance” for Smart Nation X conducted on 13 August 2021, which was jointly organized by the PMO, SSG, and NTUC LearningHub. He was also the creator, designer, and developer for Design Thinking for Data Protection course that was approved by IMDA/PDPC as well as WSG. Yen Thaw has also been speaker for critical thinking and business negotiations for e2i / SkillsFuture Singapore in 2021.

In fuelling his training passion in lifelong learning, Yen Thaw constantly upskills himself in many and different disciplines. While teaching in diverse subjects to senior management and decision makers such as technology, management, and law, he has interwoven these together through innovative and creative means in unique techniques meeting the needs of Industry 4.0. among many other subjects, he primarily teaches AI & ML, business internationalization, cybersecurity, data protection, and entrepreneurship.
