Course Overview

This course aims to equip participants with the analytical, preparative and interpretative skills that are critical to those working in a laboratory, and is mapped to laboratory technician job roles with reference to the Energy & Chemicals Skills framework.

Entry Requirements

Minimum N level/ITE/Relevant Diploma.
Participants are required to bring their own laptop with pre-installed Microsoft Excel.

Day 1

Laboratory Safety & Risk Management
Chemical Handling & Waste Disposal
Sampling, Sample preparation & Sample retention
Hands-on: Calibration of Volumetric Glassware & Analytical Balance (Intro on how to use pipette, micropipettes, analytical balance)
Data handling & reporting

Written Assessment (Open Book) – Consist of MCQ & Short Answer Question

Day 2

Breath Testing - Introduction to Hydrogen Breath Test (HBT), patient preparation guidelines, preparation of breath samples, performing of breath test
Working principles behind HBT, data handling, analysis and reporting
Introduction to Urea Breath Test (UBT), patient preparation guidelines, preparation of breath samples, performing of breath test
Working principles behind UBT
Breath test data handling, analysis & reporting

Written Assessment (Open Book) - Consist of MCQ & Short Answer Question

Certification

Participants will be issued with a Certificate of Accomplishment upon meeting 75% of the required course attendance and passed the assessments.

Lecturer/Trainer Profile

Ms Cathy P. Sagun

Cathy P. Sagun has extensive R&D and QA/QC experience in the pharma, biotech, and food industries as Senior Chemist II. She moved from 3M Technologies Pte Ltd (Drug Delivery Systems Division) to conduct academic research at Temasek Polytechnic in 2013. She was part of a multidisciplinary R&D team that developed the drug-medical device combination product: Automated Wearable Artificial Kidney. Her main focus areas were the sorbent and infusate systems, analytical method developments, and regulations. After completing her TP and MOE-funded projects, she pivoted and became a lecturer in 2019. She holds a faculty position in a Biomedical Engineering diploma. She had been a registered chemist in the Philippines since 2003.

Dr Rangaswamy Raja

Dr Rangaswamy Raja graduated with PhD in life science from India in 1995 and completed his 3rd Masters in Bioinformatics (sponsored by Temasek Polytechnic Management) from NTU Singapore in 2007. He held a Lecturer position and conducted research in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences in Universiti Putra Malaysia from October 1998 prior to his current employment as Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering, Temasek Polytechnic. His research interest includes work on hydrogel and biomedical industry-related research areas. He has published papers at national and international conferences.

Dr Gordon Lim

Gordon Lim is a Singapore-based scientist and a marketing professional who has been involved in the marketing of diagnostic products for many of Asia’s most debilitating diseases for the last twenty years. He had successfully launched the Helico Blot 2.0 western blot assay as a diagnostic tool for Helicobacter pylori diagnosis in China. Gordon Lim graduated from Nagoya University with a PhD. He was an educator at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and currently pursues his interests in geriatric studies and dementia.

Mr Samuel Ko

Samuel Ko currently works in BioMedix Singapore Pte. Ltd as an Account Manager. He is in charge of several key product lines in Clinical Diagnostics like Randox, ELITechGroup, Maine, Asan Pharmaceuticals etc. He has been conducting training on the application and use of various laboratory and clinical diagnostic instruments for audiences such as doctors, nurses and laboratory technicians for the past few years. Samuel Ko has been teaching in various capacities, both inside and outside of work. He graduated from the National University of Singapore with a BSc (Hons) in Life Sciences.
