Course Overview

Are you a manager tasked to read financial reports but lack an accounting or finance background? Or do you want to be more confident with financial terms and tools to be more effective in your work?

This 2-day course will introduce non-financial managers to the world of finance and help them understand an organisation's financial issues. You will be equipped with the skills and knowledge in financial terms and concepts and key accounting principles to analyse financial statements and performance measures. It will also cover financial ratios that aid management in planning, control, and decision-making to improve the organisation's financial health.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be a PMET with at least a recognised Diploma. Applicants will be screened and selected by Temasek Polytechnic. Application will be considered based on first-come-first-served basis.

Grasping of key accounting principles and concepts that govern the preparation of financial statements
Understanding the importance of cash flow and the significance of the difference between profits and cash
Explaining the manager’s role in preparing and monitoring budgets
Performing and interpreting the results of ratios analysis to assess the performance of a business in the key areas of profitability, liquidity, working capital management, gearing and investor returns

Certification

Participants will be issued with a Certificate of Performance upon meeting 75% of the required course attendance.

Lecturer/Trainer Profile

Ms Christine Cheong

Senior Lecturer, Diploma in Accountancy & Finance, School of Business

Christine graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration & Accountancy (cum laude) from the University of the Philippines. She obtained her Masters in Business Administration in Finance/Computer Information Systems from University of California, Los Angeles. She also obtained her Certified Public Accountant qualifications in the Philippines and in California, USA and is a member of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants.

Christine has industry experience in the areas of auditing, general accounting, cost and management accounting in the Philippines, USA and Singapore. She then joined Temasek Polytechnic as a lecturer where she taught various accounting related subjects.

She has taught working adults for customised courses in accounting-related topics to external clients including Sentosa Development Corporation, American International Assurance Company Ltd (AIA), Commercial Affairs Department, Millenia Institute, ST Electronics, Singapore Customs, Singapore Computer Society and Integrated Health Information Systems.

Mr Chan Soon Huat

Senior Lecturer, Diploma in Accountancy & Finance, School of Business

Soon Huat graduated at the top of his class, obtaining a Bachelor in Business Administration from the National University of Singapore in 1981. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), a well recognised post-graduate certification for professionals working in the investment field.

Mr Chan has extensive experience with over 16 years working in equity analysis, both as an Investment Analyst as well as Head of Research, specializing in the coverage of mainly Singapore stocks, but also short stints in Malaysian and Indonesian stocks. His research experience was acquired working for various international stockbrokers (including Jardine Fleming Securities, Smith New Court (currently known as Merrill Lynch) and Paul Morgan & Associates and the fund management arm of New Zealand Insurance (Singapore).

Soon Huat joined Temasek Polytechnic as a lecturer in 1998 and is currently a full-time Accountancy and Finance lecturer in School of Business. He has taught subjects such as Business Finance, International Finance, Fundamentals of Investment, Security Analysis & Portfolio Management, Personal Financial Planning and Bank Treasury Management to full-time students.

He has also been involved in providing training for working adults via customized investment courses for external clients as well as for the polytechnic’s Specialist Diploma in Accounting and Finance.
