Course Overview

This short course is designed to help local and international students be equipped with language skills, with a particular emphasis on the vocabulary and grammar suited for the academic learning environment. It also aims to prepare the participants for any English Language test set by the universities. Participants will acquire and increase their proficiency in the following areas:

Critical reading and analysis
Research skills
Listening and note-taking skills
Evaluation of primary and secondary resources and data
Academic grammar and vocabulary
Academic essay writing skills

Entry Requirements

GCE O-Level English Language (EL1) : Grades 1 – 6 or equivalent
Communication or Language-based modules from local polytechnics
Applicants for this course from Temasek Polytechnic must have attempted a Communication Skills module as offered by the respective schools

Upon completion of the programme, participants should be able to:

Acquire the receptive and productive skills of academic writing
Develop the essential and adequate language and writing skills to prepare them for university education
Speak and write fluently and accurately in Standard English
Create a variety of texts for academic purposes

Certification

Participants who meet the 75% minimum attendance and passed the assessment will be awarded a Certificate in English.

Participants who meet the 75% minimum attendance but did not pass the assessment will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.

Mrs Rita Gill

B.A. (English Language) (NUS); PGDE (NTU, NIE)

A former MOE teacher, Rita has taught Language and Literature for 8 years, prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic. Rita is currently teaching Language and Communication at the Centre for Foundation Studies, Temasek Polytechnic.

Rawzah Amir

M.A. (Language Studies) (NUS), B.A. (Advertising) (RMIT University), CELTA Certified

Rawzah spent 8 years in creative advertising before making the switch to teaching. She started her teaching career creating and managing modules relating to language and creative content. Rawzah is currently teaching Language and Communication at the Centre for Foundation Studies, Temasek Polytechnic.
