Course Overview

Many polytechnic diploma holders who pursue university degrees in Engineering, IT or Science often find university Physics very challenging. The University Preparatory Programme (UPP) in Physics course is designed to prepare graduates from local polytechnics for university-level Physics. It will discuss topics in ‘A’-level Physics such as kinematics, dynamics, Forces, Work and Energy, Momentum, thermodynamics, Gravitation, Electromagnetics and Electromagnetic Induction.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for this course should have passed any one of the following:

  • GCE O-Level Physics subject: Pure Physics or Combined Science (Physics); or
  • TP Engineering Physics or any other Physics modules from local polytechnic

What You'll Learn

  • Vectors: Vector resolution and Vector Algebra
  • Kinematics: Kinematics equations, force and torque and equilibrium of rigid bodies
  • Dynamics: Newton’s laws of motion, impulse & momentum
  • Work, Energy and Power: Principle of conservation of energy, Kinetic and Potential Energy, Work done and Power
  • First Law of thermodynamics: the kinetic theory of gases and ideal gas laws
  • Electromagnetics: Coulomb’s Law, Gauss’s Law, electric field and electric potential, Biot-Savart Law, Ampere’s Law, Faraday’s Law, Lenz’s Law, induced electric fields and eddy currents
  • Circuits: Ohm’s law, DC Circuits and AC Circuits.

Exemption

Diploma Graduates holding the University Preparatory Programme Certificate in Physics will be exempted from the Physics bridging requirements in the Engineering undergraduate curriculum at the National University of Singapore (NUS). For the admission criteria applicable to the local universities, please do approach them for a consultation.

Certification

Participants who meet the 75% minimum attendance and passed the assessment will be awarded a Certificate in Physics.

Participants who meet the 75% minimum attendance but did not pass the assessment will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.
